Music reviews of Career: 1952-1988

Music Review: The Maudlin, Defeated Sounds of Chet Baker
Rating: 4 Stars

If I had stumbled across Chet Baker earlier in life I would have fled in the opposite direction... I could not have gotten past his slight vocal talent, his sometimes flat, almost feminine delivery, and his mopey, sad-sack oeuvre. Now I am bemused that American music could even concieve of a genre that dwells on failure (Things always happen to me), wallows in self-pity and emerges in a pervasive minor chord ...with melodic codas that don't capture a hook at all, but strive instead to let even that go. With his pin-up boy looks he's embodies the beautiful loser. And if I could get my hands on the documentary 'Let's Get Lost' I could probably confirm that's the way his life went.

I am biased towards the second of these two disks (It's in my car). Chetty's Lullaby is pretty ravishing. The kind of song you'd put on for a mellow summer date-night in 1959, with the lights dimmed, and the drinks chilling in anticipation of your gal's arrival. The perfect make-out song.

Here's some special recognition for Chet's scat, which I typically don't care for, on one of the older songs, I forget which. It's s very nice.

Description of Career: 1952-1988

The only collection to cover all phases of Chet Baker's remarkable career! Deluxe 2-CD set with 60-page booklet!

Chet Baker, the paragon of cool jazz, is one of the enduring greats, known for both his trumpet playing and his equally fragile-sounding singing. Early on, his good looks made him the James Dean of jazz. But his musical gifts never deserted him, as Career 1952?1988 amply demonstrates. This 2-CD set provides a complete overview of his entire career.

During his lifetime it became difficult to separate Chet Baker's music from the sad legend he became; a textbook case of psychological disconnectedness. At the beginning of his career his matinee idol looks sometimes distracted audiences from his musical gifts. Thereafter, his drug addiction overshadowed nearly every move he made, making his artistic impulses somehow suspect. This two-disc anthology sets the record straight, dividing the recordings into his trumpet playing and his singing. The former has always been justly lauded. His cool phrasing on the trumpet was always known to draw forth emotional resonance from the simplest of melodies. His talented singing is showcased in such a way to present how his voice could resonant the same emotional stirrings as his trumpet work. With his biography presented with brief but poetic insight, this set is a perfect portrait of the man. --David Greenberger
