Music reviews of Cherryholmes II Black & WhiteMusic Review: Wait a minute!
I'm no music critic, and this is the first time I've ever submitted a commentary to website, but the two other authors I read discussing the Cherryholmes' talent simply does not do the band justice. First of all, Cia is without doubt a cool passion of presence. Her voice projects like Pavarotti and peels like the Liberty Bell. As well, she may not be the technician that Fleck and some of the other established masters are, but at 21 or 22 (I'm not sure of her age) her virtuosity on the banjo is already paranormal. This has something to do with the way she stares somewhat sardonically at the audience as she picks her way through one of the family's many songs of note - a little bit scary sexy! Additionally, her potential as a solo act might have Cia saying c-ya whenever she's ready to strike out on her own. But for now, she couldn't find a better cadre of musical companions as the rest of the family is just as talented. Speaking of which, her 19 y/o brother B.J. plays the fiddle and the mandolin like he's never gonna get to handle the instruments again. This kid is hot. His fingers (like the rest of teams') move up, down and across the fret board of their own volition. Honestly, some of the licks he laid down this past Friday night at the Arkley performance in Eureka, California were as Mr. Increadible's nemesis Syndrom would say, "This is just too good!" But I'm not done. Seventeen y/o son Skip is an equally talented flat-pickin' powerhouse on the six string. I gotta admit, I dig the banjo, fiddle, mando, and upright as much as any bluegrass kook, but when one hears the unmistakable pluck and pull proficiency of a high caliber bluegrass guitarist, it's a gift from the gods. Hot damn! I just wish the sound tech would've bumped up the level on his mic, because there was too much goin' on with the kid's playing that got mournfully missed by the audience's ear. And how could any commentary on the Cherrys' leave out 15 y/o Molly-Kate? Just as much a wizard as her sister and brothers, this violin savant couldn't have been born into any other family of phenoms. Although her solo work both vocally and on her instrument was flawless, it was particularly cool to watch her and her brother crossover one another on their shared microphone. This is because MK's a left-handed fiddler and so makes for one of those comparatively rare stage experiences where the performers are able to face each other, "dual style" as they play - totally bitchin'! O.K. what about the folks, you say? Well Dad Jere handles the bass as easily as it looks like he would handle a road-hog Harley or a jug of Triple X moonshine. This cats got Billy Gibbons' beard and Bob Hope's humor. More importantly though, I never heard a meter drop as he "beat the dog" behind the up-front talent as they lilted from their ¾ ballads to cut-time classics like the Orange Blossom Special. Smokin'. Last but not the proverbial least is the Bluegrass Mother of all Mothers. How this yodeling Queen of the whoops and hollers managed to keep the chicks line for the past couple decades is no mystery. Not only does the lady strum the mandolin and sing like a siren, she dances like a hip-hop hillbilly. As if the music wasn't enough, Sandy Lee breaks into a bluegrass river-dance two step with the flow of Hines and the finesse of Baryshnikov, but wait a second . . . stage left, Cia and Skip start kickin' right in step with mom and before the piece is over, Molly-Kate and B.J. fall in line with all five of `em dancin' a Celtic chorus line. I started to worry that maybe they were puttin' a spell on us all. In fact, the Cherryholmes' are a bit supernatural, and I can't imagine anyone in the audience left feeling not a little charmed by the time the show was over. If you guys are reading this, what do you think about adopting a 46 year old, ex park ranger? Maybe I could rotate the air in the tour bus tires? For the rest of ya, if you've not heard or seen this band perform, time to head for the record store or the local theater and find out what you're missing.
