Music Reviews of The Very Best Of Cher

Music Review: Farewell, Cher, farewell
Rating: 4 Stars

This album truly portrays the vast musical landscape that is called Rock Music. Cher has been able to continually churn hits from whatever element of music is innovative . Starting with the folk rock era of the 1960s ,finishing up with the electronic dance age of the present 21st century, Cher has captured the feel, the excitement and the transformation of her chosen field.

I bought this CD for my girlfriend and kept it for myself. I was not a Cher fan before I bought this CD. I now understand her artistry and have to praise her ability to transcend the music to become an icon of popular music.

My only knock against this album is that the early Sonny and Cher songs have not been totally remastered. In comparison to the rest of the songs on this set, they seem a little scratchy and very difficult to hear. While many would applaud the use of the complete original, I have always appreciated reediting and mastering of albums to make them better sounding.Just a personal choice, i guess...

Music Review: Someone Finally Got It Right
Rating: 5 Stars

It's now 2003, and you know what that means--time for yet another compilation from pop's longest-lasting diva. Fortunately, THE VERY BEST OF CHER manages to correct alot of the omissions that have occurred on previous stateside compilations. It goes without saying that the usual suspects are here--'Believe', 'If I Could Turn Back Time', 'Half Breed', et al. What's doubly nice here is the inclusion of moderate hits('Heart Of Stone'), as well as down-rights flops(the fantastic 'All Or Nothing', 'Save Up All Your Tears'), and the exclusion of some hits that just weren't very good records('We All Sleep Alone', 'Love And Understanding' and yes, 'The Way Of Love'). There are a few minor quibbles--the remix of 'One By One' isn't nearly as good as the far superior UK album version(or even the US album version), and the original version of 'A Different Kind Of Love Song' would also have been a better choice here. Otherwise, this stands as Cher's best compilation released stateside.

Music Review: CHER-ING ALL THE GREAT MUSIC ... AND SOME GOLDEN OLDIES TOO
Rating: 5 Stars

We believe in Cher-ing the wealth. So does Warner Strategic Marketing, who had quite the hand in this rehash and recycle of Cher's "very best." There's nothing new here, and that doesn't matter. Cher fans will love the purple glittery slipcase packaging (wasn't her hair once this color?) Unwrap and find hit after hit, from "Believe" to "After All" to "If I
Could Turn Back Time" to "Heart of Stone" to a slew of vintage Cher solos, such as "Half-Breed," "Dark Lady" and "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves." (Left out: "Carousel Man," "The Way of Love" and "Train of Thought." Our train of thought: Why?) There
are two Sonny and Cher golden oldies thrown in as well. Kurt Loder's liner notes are nothing more but rehashed and recycled mash notes, and the few photos have all been seen
and savored many a time before. But, hey, we're here for the music. The beat goes on.
And yes, she's got us babe. So take me home. And we're taking "The Very Best of Cher"
with us.

Music Review: get it for ONE BY ONE!
Rating: 5 Stars

Sure, "Believe" is the dance song everyone knows and loves, and it truly is a great track. But if it weren't for the club success of "One By One" in 1996, the "Believe" album would never have been made! I am really glad that the general public will finally be exposed to this wonderful dance track on this CD, the first time that the Junior Vasquez Club EDIT has been released. This song is the true gem of Cher's dance music career. As for the complilation itself, yes "Love and Understanding", "The Way of Love" and "We All Sleep Alone" are missing and this warranted a 2-disc set ... but reviewing what IS here, it's still a fantastic listen from beginning to end. One minor quibble: if "A Different Kind of Love Song" was chosen as one of the tracks, why did they chose the extremely lame Rodney Jerkins remix over the fantastic Lenny B remix (found on the maxi-single) or the wonderful "Living Proof" album version? This decision makes no sense at all.

Music Review: Pure pop genius
Rating: 5 Stars

There are many legitimate ways to criticize Cher and her music, but in the end, you'll be happier to succumb to her determined world-weary vocals which have an oddly affecting and convincing emotional consistency -- nevermind how silly some of these songs are. She embraces pop music with a wink, and let's us know we're in on the fun -- unlike, say, Madonna who takes herself way too seriously. Cher knows her limitations, and this becomes her endearing virtue. She may be a self-made glamorous creation, but she somehow manages to keep it real. Most of her best singles are here, and it's a blast with some minor exceptions. I think the remix version of "One By One" used here is very weak, compared to the original British version, or even the American album release version, and the exclusion of "The Way of Love" is glaringly wrong. Still, what's here is giddy fist-pumping butt-wiggling pop music at its best.
