Music reviews of The Very Best Of CherMusic Review: Cher: The Very Best Of Cher (2003) Rating: 5 Stars
By this point, Cher has released well over 30 to 40 albums. In 2003, while still on her farewell tour, which was appropriately titled, LIVING PROOF: THE FAREWELL TOUR, Cher released another greatest hits compiliation entitled, THE VERY BEST OF CHER. This greatest hits is a must-have Cher piece and contains just about every classic Cher song you really want.
BELIEVE
From the album BELIEVE (1998). One of the best songs of 1998. Cher scored herself yet another #1 with this one. I even dedicated to my grandfather. I know that you are all saying, 'What is he thinking, dedicating a break-up song to his grandfather?' Well, my grandfather loved this song so much that I had to dedicate it to him.
IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME
From the album HEART OF STONE (1989). A song I have loved since day one. This song is nothing short of a classic and I cannot help but sing along with it each time I hear it.
HEART OF STONE
From the album HEART OF STONE (1989). Another classic hit. Gotta love that acoustic guitar.
JUST LIKE JESSE JAMES
From the album HEART OF STONE (1989). Irresistible. Just irresistible to my ears.
SAVE UP ALL YOUR TEARS
From the album LOVE HURTS (1991). This is another great song that I really enjoy listening to. You all do know that when Cher released the LOVE HURTS album, she actually wanted this to be the album's first single, but "Love And Understanding" was chosen as the first single from LOVE HURTS, whereas this one was chosen to be the second single.
AFTER ALL (with Peter Cetera)
From the original motion picture Chances Are (1988). From Cher's album HEART OF STONE (1989). A classic hit. I want to give you all a tip: whenever doing karaoke, don't ever do this one. I did this one with my cousin's girlfriend. I was fine with the solo parts, but until I got to the chorus, I screwed up left and right.
I FOUND SOMEONE
From the album CHER (1987). First off, the 1987 album, CHER, is Cher's second album that is self-titled, whereas the first self-titled album was released back in 1966. This song is actually not Cher's song; it is Laura Branigan's song. Laura Branigan had recorded this song and released it back in 1986, but it was never hit. Cher's rendition is way better and it was this rendition that became the major hit.
ONE BY ONE (Junior Vasquez Vocal Edit)
Original version from the album IT'S A MAN'S WORLD (1996). The album version is better, but this remix is definitely more groovier for you to dance your a** off.
ALL OR NOTHING
From the album BELIEVE (1998). This is anothe favorite track of mine from the BELIEVE album.
SONG FOR THE LONELY
From the album LIVING PROOF (2002). Cher dedicated this one to Governor Pataki, Mayor Gulianni, the firefighters, and the people of NYC. This is a great song and Cher is wise to dedicate it to the people of NYC. If I did this song, I would have dedicated it to them as well. This is one hell of a song.
TAKE ME HOME
From the album TAKE ME (1979). Gotta love Cher's disco era, where this song is placed there perfectly. Great dance song.
THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG (IT'S IN HIS KISS)
From the original motion picture & soundtrack MERMAIDS (1990). So much better than the original, and the theme song to Cher's 1990 film, MERMAIDS, co-starring Winona Ryder & Christina Ricci.
ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO
From the album ALL I REALLY WANT TO DO (1965). A single that was taken from Cher's very first solo album. Not bad.
BANG BANG (MY BABY SHOT ME DOWN)
From the album THE SONNY SIDE OF CHER (1966). First off, Sonny Bono, Cher's former late partner and late ex-husband, had written this for her when Cher was recording for her second album entitled, THE SONNY SIDE OF CHER. This original Cher recording is not bad. In 1987, when Cher was recording for her album CHER, she decided to re-record this song, making it a Heavy Metal version, which can be found on Cher's album, IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME-CHER'S GREATEST HITS.
HALF-BREED
From the album HALF-BREED (1973). At first, I was never too fond of this song, but the more I heard it, the more I began to really like it.
GYPSYS, TRAMPS, & THIEVES
From the album GYPSYS, TRAMPS AND THIEVES (1971). It seems as though by the time Cher had gotten into the 70s, her music became even better than her 60s music. This song, which was, I think, her first #1 hit, is an example of her great early 70s sound.
DARK LADY
From the album HALF-BREED (1973). When this song was originally featured on the HALF-BREED album, Cher had then released it as a single before releasing the song again on the 1974 album, DARK LADY. So, just clear things up, this song was released as a single from HALF-BREED, and was later included on DARK LADY. This song makes me think of Cher as my Dark Lady. Great song.
THE BEAT GOES ON (performed by Sonny & Cher)
From Sonny & Cher's album IN CASE YOU'RE IN LOVE (1966). I did not like this one at first, but I thought, 'Why not give it a second try? Maybe, I'll like it better than I thought'. So, I listened to it a second time and I don't regret that I did, because this is another classic, right behind the duo's ultimate classic, "I Got You Babe".
I GOT YOU BABE (performed by Sonny & Cher)
From Sonny & Cher's album LOOK AT US (1966). We all know that this was Sonny & Cher's biggest selling single and it will forever remain a classic. The first time I heard this song was when it was played at the end credits of the hit film, LOOK WHO'S TALING TOO.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF LOVE SONG (Rodney Jerkins Main Mix Faster)
Original version from the album LIVING PROOF. The original is much better.
This album is definitely one of Cher's greatest compilations and it shows just how talented this truly incredible Diva is. If you have this album, then sit back and listen to only the best of Cher.

Description of The Very Best Of Cher21 unforgettable Cher songs on one disc spotlighting Sonny & Cher along with her recent hits. slipcase. Warner/Geffen. 2003. Given a five-decade career that's been one long series of critical write-offs and subsequent comeback triumphs, it's tempting to argue that the natural elements are actually earth, wind, fire, water--and Cher. Anchored by her 1998 international mega-success "Believe" (the song that made Cher the oldest woman to score a chart topper) and its equally club-savvy contemporary collaborations with producers Mark Taylor and Brian Rawlings, "Song for the Lonely" and "A Different Kind of Love Song," this 21-track anthology is indeed the first to contain all her No. 1 hits, stretching back to her epochal 1965 duet with Sonny Bono on the faux-Dylan "I Got You Babe." And if it shortchanges her Phil Spector-rooted origins and a true perspective on her '60s and '70s career (though kitsch classic chart toppers "Dark Lady," "Half-Breed," and "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves" are all here) to focus on her string of '80s and '90s pop successes in service of writers like Diane Warren ("If I Could Turn Back Time") and Desmond Child ("Just Like Jesse James"), it's good to remember that, according to the pop soothsayers, none of them were even supposed to happen, let alone make her an icon for a whole new generation. It's a tribute to sheer, fashion-defying willpower--and as unlikely an argument for the notion of "the singer, not the song" as one is likely to find. --Jerry McCulley
