As with the release of Rockford, I had to order The Latest and wait for it to make its way to Australia - obviously where I live. You lucky US residents get the jump on me by a few weeks. I bought it off the CT website, express post, waited over a month and nothing. Then I was informed: NO STOCK!!! How could the official website have NO STOCK!!! Cancelled that one and downloaded instead from Amazon (couldn't wait any longer - have re-ordered the CD also) and the tracks have been in heavy rotation since. Thought the band might get and extra 50c if I bought from their site. I'll stick with Amazon in the future.
I've been listening to (and loving) the 5 released preview tracks non stop.
At the time of Rockford I wondered if that would be their last album - they ARE getting on........sorry guys. Would have been a great one if it was but any new releases are very welcomed. How long will the magic last? As long as possible hopefully. So proud of them for still putting out new material and best part is, it's quality material. So what that this is a mix of the old and the new.
Julian Raymond has done a fantastic job producing here. He had a hand in writing two of the best songs from Rockford (If It Takes A Lifetime and All Those Years) and the best track from Special One (My Obsession). CT do it so much better on their own, (Lap of Luxury's a testament to the negative affect of outside influences) but JR seems to be a great collaborator with them.
Can we compare it to earlier `hey day' releases? It wouldn't be fair to. I can't say it's their best album since `whenever' because I said that about Rockford. It's certainly their best album since Rockford. Too early to tell if it's better though but I doubt it will be; they're very different albums. The first half of Rockford will be hard to top.
If I had to compare with the more recent previous efforts though, I'd say it has the variety of Woke Up With A Monster, it flows better than Special One, it doesn't rock as hard as Cheap Trick ('97) and like Busted, would benefit from one more rocker.
I can't say I like the fact that some songs are so short, but it shows a diversity that CT have perhaps lacked on previous releases. Songs are short and to the point though; that can't be all bad. No endless repeats of choruses here - not that they were ever guilty of that.
The downside of short songs is they don't a chance to go anywhere, to build up, which is apparent on a couple of songs here.
I can't be too critical (not to CT) but it's almost like a couple of the songs are well produced demo's; recorded before they were finished, still requiring some tweaking and elongating. I don't know, it's certainly a strange one. Hopefully someone out there understands what I mean. Every song here is a gem, there's just something not quite there with a couple of them. One for me to ponder for years to come I'm sure. I'm sounding negative which isn't my intention. This is a great album. Certainly in the top half of their best.
Robin's voice is better here than on Rockford. A real highlight.
Sleep Forever's a nice opener. Not the up tempo rocker we've become accustomed to as an opener. Would it be better with a crashing, rocking 30 sec climax? I would say yes (that's what I like), others would disagree, saying it's not what the songs about - and you're right, it's not. It's a nice track all the same. It can be played at my funeral. 3.5 stars.
So glad When the Lights Are Out gets an album release. Hoped it would after it was released last year. Catchy tune, with an ELO Kiddies riff. Almost identical to the original Slade version though. Not sure why Slade didn't release it as a single. 4 stars. Can't rate a cover higher than that.
Miss Tomorrow is one of the catchiest songs in their catalogue. Great mid-tempo pop song. Would fit right in on Special One or Busted - and be the highlight. I haven't heard Robin's original version. Wasn't sure about the Oh-wao-wao part at first but it's grown on me. 4.5 stars.
Sick Man Of Europe is an awesome lead song. Not quite as good as Perfect Stranger (lead single from Rockford) but that's 5 star material. 4.5 for Sick. Could have been 5 if it wasn't so short!!!
These Days is a great track (other than the opening line) and an early standout. Strangely though, it was that last song of them all that I could recall the tune of without listening. Sounds unfinished though. It just ends after a verse chorus / verse chorus. Need to be more. 4 stars.
Everyday You Make Me Crazy is too good to be as short as it is - but everyone knows that. But I suppose if you can say all you need to say in a song in one minute then why stretch it out. 4 stars.
California Girl's another punchy rocker. Reminds me a bit of Love's Got A Hold On Me. Good, not great. 3.5 stars.
Miracle is the weakest track on offer here. Not fussed on the chorus. A good song though but will hopefully grow on me. Has some really nice elements to it; really like the intro and the finishing note. 3 stars.
Everybody Knows is almost as good as Oh Claire (Rockford) but is perhaps more commercially accessible. One of the highlights - for me, THE highlight. 5 stars.
Alive's a fast paced rocker. So very catchy. Initially I wasn't taken with the first half of the chorus (bit cliché perhaps) but the second half is as catchy as anything they've done before. Has an 80's feel; the keyboards in the background give it a One On One feel with a touch of Dream Police. 4.5 stars.
Times Of Our Lives is a mid tempo charmer. Really grows on you after 5-6 listens. Beatles flavorings. 4 stars..
The channelling of the Fab Four is apparent on Closer and it's a great track that would fit in on Revolver. Once again, ends too soon though and another track that I wish would go somewhere further. Very catchy, has a cool rolling rhythm. 4.5 stars.
Smile's another strong ballad. If this song were done by an Idol or someone more `hip' it would be a top ten hit. 4 stars.
Better than Special One, one rocker off being on par with Rockford.
Now, if the rerecorded In Color can get an official release (come on, it's been 11 years on the shelf (and on bootleg)!!) this year and the remaining 80's album can get remastered I'll be in Heaven Tonight.
Let's hope we don't have to wait another 3 years for another new release. I'm still waiting for a studio release from 2000. We had releases in 94, 97, 2003, 2006 and now 2009. What happened in 2000? Financial woes I guess. Disenchantment after what happened in 97 maybe. So glad they got back on the bike though.
Please Tour Australia again!! On your own this time!!

Description of The LatestMulti-platinum rock band Cheap Trick returns with The Latest, a self-released album and their first new studio album since 2006's Rockford. The Latest, produced by Julian Raymond & Howard Willing, continues Cheap Trick's reign as power-pop progenitors as they celebrate their 35th anniversary together. The album features the original line-up of Robin Zander - vocals and guitar, Rick Nielsen - guitar and backing vocals, Bun E. Carlos - drums and backing vocals & Tom Petersson - bass and backing vocals. According to producer Julian Raymond, "Cheap Trick are fun to record because they are each a master of their craft, and there are so many great new songs on this record. But we also included an old one called 'When The Lights Are Out.' I couldn't believe it wasn't released in '76 when the band did it. I insisted they put it on the record just as it was."
