Music Review: Oh Charlie,What's The Point Anymore?

Charlie Wilson,former lead singer of The Gap Band and Snoop Dogs godfather;what direction is he going to choose?That's been the big question since Charlie went solo and even before The Gap Band's last offering in the embarrassing Y2K: Funkin' Till 2000 Comz.Is Charlie still a funkateer or a modern day R&B mackdaddy?Well this newest album makes it all the more apparent he is still totally uncertain of his direction as a solo artist as well as how his music should be presented. One problem is that The Gap Band's clipped production has a lot of influence on todays hip-hop R&B.But fact is that particular genre has long since gone astray,seeing as it is about the only style of R&B that will get you on the radio. In fact it's been beaten to death more then other genres that saturated the commercial landscape such as disco and New Jack Swing. Nontheless many of these songs here such as "Musta Heard" and even ballads like "One Time" just fly where that wind blows-likely a ploy to try to recieve huge radio and Ipod play and to put a Charlie Wilson video into heavy rotation on TRL and/or online. It just about panders as much as possible to the whole digital saturation-production/computerized marketing issue pleaging R&B at this point.On the other hand Charlie also is intent on forging ahead in places towards a sound that blends the classic style of his work with The Gap Band with the same modern prodction.Actually the bonus track "Super Sexy",recorded with T.Pain is really a prime example;T.Pain never overwelms Charlie's ideas with his own egotisitic rantings and it works well for both old and new fans. That's not to say that says it all for this album;"Back To Love" and "Let It Out",with Snoop Dog in full understanding of the sound as well on the latter again blend old and new funk stylings;modern production elements with an arrangment straight out of an album like Gap Band V: Jammin'. "There Goes My Baby" and "Homeless" are good and genuine ballads although I prefer the former musically-again more of an attempt at being a genuine musical fusion then a way to pander to an overdone musical style. At least unlike 90's releases by people such as The Dazz Band,Ray Parker Jr or even Midnight Star this doesn't try to disguise mechanical sounding hip-hop beats as modern funk. But that does'nt make a difference.We're talking about three great tunes,one good one and eight other songs that are typical and uninteresting. That doesn't make this an album worth going for as a whole and Charlie,having the ability that he does as a vocalist and otherwise should see this as a sign his sound obviously should continue to be fine tuned.
