Music Review: A poor way to become aquainted

Sometimes, no, usually, the cheapest is not the best buy. The first problem is that there are two Charlie Parkers: the 1942-1949 innvator who, in fantastic burst of creative energy, blew away the entire jazz scene; and the Norman Granz productions of the 50's when Bird lost a lot of his chops to his habit but continued to play better (and prettier) than most sax players but in a watered down, user friendly style. For this listener at least, once you become immersed in the former, the latter seems kind of bland.
The second problem is the sound quality on the Burns disc: it is BAD. For those apologists who say you can't get better sound quality on old direct-to-disk (as opposed to using tape) recordings, comparing tracks that also appear on Charlie Parker: A Studio Chronicle 1940-1948 shows just how badly Burns did it. It is essential to be able hear the interplay, tone, and subtlties that distinguish Parker. If you really want to know about Charlie Parker, do you buy the Burns disk and listen from two rooms away for one hour or spend the extra bucks for Chronicle and have a front row seat for up to six? And if you want to hear his work from the Norman Granz Verve years, there are plenty of nice collections of just that, again with much better recording quality. Mixing the two Parkers together on one disk, even if the tracks were remastered well, causes jarring transitions in style and sound quality that degrades enjoyment of either Parker.
Finally, Charlie Parker just can't be summed up on one CD. ALL of his early work is worth listening to; you just won't get tired of his sound even if you listen to several of the Chronicle CD's back-to-back. To cull out a few of these and call them "best" is a fool's exercise.

Charlie Parker is one of the legendary figures of jazz, a musician whose troubled life and creative genius have inspired works like Clint Eastwood's film Bird. As this collection demonstrates, though, the legend could never be larger than the art. Parker was simply one of the two or three greatest improvisers ever to play jazz. He created solos of unmatched harmonic and rhythmic subtlety at tempos few musicians could even negotiate. This selection provides a unique single-CD introduction to Parker's work, touching on his earliest recordings with the blues-based Kansas City band of Jay McShann and the early collaborations with Dizzy Gillespie that marked the dawn of bop. The period of Parker's greatest creativity was brief, and it spanned several record companies--Savoy, Dial, and Verve--all of them represented here. Among the masterpieces are the slow blues of "Parker's Mood" and the stunning "Just Friends," with Parker's liquid alto cascading brilliantly over a small string section. --Stuart BroomerGeneral CDs
