Music Review: Choice Jazz Serving from Charlie Haden & Quartet West

Twelve tracks totaling 60.31 minutes,recorded on both the east and west coasts between May and July 2010. A followup, as such, from 1999's "Art of the Song" CD.
Ruth Cameron, who helped create Quartet West along with C.H., handles most of the production chores and contributes one vocal track. Alan Broadbent is responsible for the string arrangements which grace 11 of the 12 tracks. Charlie Haden captains all the quartet arrangements.
The CD is a well crafted song cycle painting an intense love affair found,lived and lost.
The only disappointment is the absence of liner notes. This project deserves artist commentary as well as a thorough documentation of song credits and recording locations.
Melody Gardot kicks it off with a vocal interpretation of,"If I'm lucky". All the band members provide just the right musical shadings to make this tune a rewarding listening experience. Ms.Gardot is an exceptional artist, with a rare vocal gift aptly demonstrated on this selection. As an aside, listeners should explore her bio which is fascinating to say the least. Her CD," My One and Only Thrill", produced by the living legend Larry Klein,is highly recommended.
Track two, is an instrumental arrangement of the Ellington / Parish composition "Sophisticated Lady". It's a marvelous arrangement featuring the exceptionally inffectious horn notes of Ernie Watts. Some tasty musical insights are provided by Alan Broadbent's piano touches.
Next up is a classic vocal interpretation of "Ill Wind" provided by Norah Jones. She possesses a rich, soulful vocal instrument perfectly suited for this timeless classic. Although,not noted,I suspect she handles the keyboard contributions on this selection.
The fourth cut is an instrumental, titled "Today I am a man". This phrase is borrowed from the statement a young man offers at his Bar Mitzvah. He stands in front of his community and demonstrates his literacy and understanding of the community laws. I'd like to believe,Charlie Haden intended this composition to demonstrate similar goals on a jazz musician's artistic level.Either way, the arrangements and individual contributions are spot on.
Next, Cassandra Wilson joins Charlie and company on an exceptional ballad,"My Love and I",which is framed with a sublime string arrangement. It simply doesn't get better then this. Cassandra is on the top of her game. Just listen to her phrasing and subtle undertones which elevate this song to an utter blissful plateau.
Track six, "Theme from Markin,"is another instrumental track that features a one of a kind tenor sax solo from Ernie Watts.
Track seven features Ruth Cameron's vocal,"Let's Call It a Day". She provides the perfect coloring to the tale of a love relationship whose passion has flamed out. In my opinion,her solo recording career has been overlooked and hasn't reached the commercial success she deserves. I urge any discriminating listener to checkout her CD titled, "Roadhouse". You will be pleasantly rewarded.
Track eight, "Angel Face", the third instrumental installment, could easily fit with any of the Quartet West's previous releases. It serves as the ideal interlude between the previous track and the next vocal by Renee Fleming.
Track nine "A love Like This", features Renee Fleming. She's an exceptional soprano best know for her successful opera career. She's a versatile performer, whose vocal elevates this track to a profound level. Listeners interested in her more contemporary work should pursue her highly acclaimed CD, "Dark Hope".
Track ten, "My Old Flame', is a rewarding instrumental experience. This selection is free of strings but is pleasantly embraced with Charlie's double bass notes. Rodney Green provides great brush work throughout. As always, Ernie and Alan's inter weaving notes melts icebergs
Track eleven titled "Goodbye", highlights Diana Krall's soulful voice, matched perfectly with Quartet West and a superb string arrangement. Words and music are pure heartbreak. The feeling of an intense love affair ending. The lyric," Let's say farewell with a sigh and let love die",' kiss me as you go ", as handled by Ms. Krall can only be described as soul shaking.
The set concludes with "Wahoo", a pleasant up-tempo composition. All the musicians take a solo outing. A brilliant musical conclusion to a very sublime set. You can almost imagine the credits rolling at the soaring conclusion of this most enduring musical journey.
