Music Review: Least favourite...

I don't strongly dislike this album, but it's one of my least favourite Chaka albums. (I can't speak for "Chaka," "Come 2 My House," or "The Woman I Am" because I don't have those, but I have the remaining albums.) A lot of the songs are plain boring to me, and sound like standard pop/rock stuff that is not the music style I associate Chaka with. She adds some splendor to it with her voice, but other than that some of the songs just sound like drivel to me.There were three singles on this--"Clouds," "Papillon," and "Get Ready, Get Set." The singles to me are the best tracks on the album, which is usually not the case with a strong "albums artist" like Chaka. "Papillon" is breathtaking, with sad lyrics and sentimental sounds. "Clouds" took a while to grow on me, and is pretty much the standard disco tune of the day. However, Chaka's emotion-ridden voice makes it into something special. (It was the biggest hit of the album, peaking at No. 10 on the R&B charts.) "Get Ready, Get Set" is musically pretty ordinary, but it's once again Chaka's voice that makes it into a steamy showpiece.
My other favourite tracks are the sensitive "Nothing's Gonna Take You Away," the energizing "Too Much Love," and the disco-ish "Our Love's In Danger." On the other hand, "Move Me No Mountain" and "What You Did" don't capture my interest and sound bland in comparison, and "All Night's All Right" just sounds weird to me.
Perhaps I'm not the right person to review this, because 70's/early 80's Funk is one of my least favourite genres of that time. Consequently, I only like selective songs from Chaka's Rufus days, songs that most other fans prefer over Chaka's later, more pop-influenced hits. I guess this review serves as a warning to people who like Chaka's dance/pop material better, because this album definitely doesn't fit into that category for the most part.
