Music Review: She Sings With An Air of Reality Only a Mother Could

The concept of an album specifically designed to please mothers and those soon to be doesn't sound like it would be even noticeable in the music marketplace, does it? Indeed, it probably wouldn't be in the hands of most singers, but apparently it is when wrapped in the voice of Celine Dion, the best-selling female singer of our time. It is most certain that such a sales-be-dammed album could only debuting in the Top 5 of the album chart is remarkable. Even more remarkable still is its continued respectable success.
Although anyone who knows just how talented a chanteuse Dion is should not be too surprised, it is nonetheless unexpected that the album actually has the ability to appeal to anyone who appreciates lush, lovely ballads. A collaboration between herself and celebrated photographer Anne Geddes, previously known for her dexterity in capturing the beauty of newborns in pictures, the "Miracle" project is available as a single CD with a handful of Geddes' images of Dion with babies interspersed throughout the artwork, and a deluxe edition with a 180 page book filled with Geddes' images, the album, and a special `making-of' DVD documenting the project.
The opening and title track is a seamless track that is truly tailor-made for Dion. Written by Steve Dorff and Linda Thompson, it is indescribably beautiful and the epitome of what the project is all about.
"I'm overwhelmed with happiness/So blessed to hold you close/The one that I love most/Though the future has so much for you in store/Who could ever love you more?"
Although she has doubtless annoyed some listeners by borrowing her interpretations of "Brahm's Lullaby" from 1998's seasonal disc "These Are Special Times" and "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" from 1999's "All the Way: A Decade of Song," both fit the scheme of the collection ideally. Still, it is frustrating that "All Because of You," a leftover from her 2002 comeback album "A New Day Has Come," wasn't included. Released on CD as only a B-side overseas, the song not only has radio potential but also should have been included on this project in the name of common sense.
"There's nothing I wouldn't do for you/You're the answer I've been needing/Life has a whole new meaning now/All because of you."
Not to be missed is "Baby Close Your Eyes," which she sings with an air of reality only a mother could. Likewise is her performance of Barbra Streisand's "If I Could." Reaching the vocal stratospheres she is deservedly known for, Dion makes the song just as heart-tugging and inspired as she did on her recently released live album, rendering Streisand's interpretation deferior. Her laid-back take on John Lennon's classic "Beautiful Boy" also provides some ear candy and gives the disc a chance not to take itself so seriously.
If you are a by-the-wind fan of Dion who listens for hits like "I'm Alive" or "That's the Way It Is," then "Miracle" is not your cup of tea. However, if you fancy widescreen ballads and can appreciate the fact that Dion loves being a mother even more than she does being a singer, it certainly is.

Which works out great for Celine fans who have made contact with their maternal sides. More than anything, the disc plays as a valentine to new mothers: "Le Loup, La Biche et le Chevalier (Une Chanson Douce)," "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," and John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" get the trademark melt-away vocal treatment, causing the need to keep a box of tissues at the ready. While tenderness flows from each track as consistently as formula from a baby bottle, though, the chanteuse doesn't shy away from the passion and note-pounding that are also her trademarks.
