Music Reviews of Bellini: La SonnambulaMusic Review: The new Sonnambula Rating: 5 Stars
This is a breathtakingly beautiful recording. The sound is pure and clear and not on a grand scale as the Sutherland /Pavarotti set is. It is earnestly and beautifully acted by the principals. It is a must have for Sonnambula recordings joining Sutherland /Pavarotti and also the Callas/Bernstein sets. It is in a class of it's own as are the other 2. You couldn't choose between any of the 3 they all bring great gifts to the listener. All principlas in the new recording including the orchestra are pure and clear giving a great transparency to the whole opera. Usually I find Bartoli overly mannered but here her work is truly appropriate and affecting.
Music Review: disaster Rating: 2 Stars
I purchased this opera to hear something new. That was my first mistake. I agree with the other reviews about Bartoli. This opera's success mainly depends of the Prima Donna. Bartoli reminds me of a silent movie star who over exaggerates facial expressions to show emotions. She is totally wrong for the role. Now for the booklet. The CDs are crammed into the sleeves of the booklet, almost impossibe to remove without damaging the CDs. There is a nice picture in the booklet. Why would it be on the fold of the booklet? Half the image is on one page the other half on the opposite page. This opera is on the express lane for the bargin bins.
Music Review: Buyer Beware Rating: 2 Stars
By the end of this recording, you'll wish Amina had fallen off the bridge in the first act prior to walking on stage. Bartoli's contribution is an almost total liability. Shame too, since the rest of the recording is quite fine. Juan Diego Florez deserves much better than this. The packaging is as phony and ridiculous as Bartoli's performance. Buy this set if you want to blow twenty bucks on a good party record.
Music Review: Am I missing something? Rating: 5 Stars
I personally think this is a wonderful recording. Love the singing of the principles, the sound is great, and the opera is superb. The negative reviews to me seem to be out of line with the fine quality of this product. Highly recommended.
Music Review: Florez, Great Tenor? Rating: 3 Stars
I cannot believe that in this day in age that Florez is considered a great singer. All I can think of when he is singing are the old "Mighty Mouse" cartoons. "Here I come to save the day"
