Music reviews of Cassie

Music Review: Goods Songs For A Mediocre Talent.
Rating: 3 Stars

Cassie--proof that all it takes is a pretty face to make it in the industry. Whether you are in love with her debut album or not, it doesn't take much to recognize that Cassie is no Beyonce. She strains to reach her high notes and as far as soul...she has none. Other reviews from this site have blasted her for her lack of talent deeming her incapable of singing, but I'm not so much convinced that is true. Producer Ryan Leslie seems to hold her back in a lot of the songs, forcing her to play it safe. To make up for power, he decides what's best is to continually overlay her voice during the bridge or chorus on every song in order to fill in for something she lacks. Rarely do you ever hear her vibrato. It's just a plain note after the next. Why do you think artists like Beyonce Knowles and Christina Aguilera are so popular? It's because they take the risk to hit that high key. They warble the notes. They feel the music. Not to say that Cassie will ever be able to sing like those soul sisters, but there is a difference between living the music and just signing the notes written by someone else. Below are my song critiques on a scale from 1 to 10:

_ _ _

Me & U - This track is by far the best song off of the album. Like her voice, the song is simple--simple notes, simple beats--and yet has so much substance to it. Unfortunately, `Me & U' is not indicative to rest of the album sound. (10)

Long Way 2 Go - The only reason why this song is good is because it takes the same formula devised in "Me & U" and applies it similarly to this song--the only real difference being Cassie's attempt at rapping which has as little life to it as her singing. Although harsh on my critique, I still like this song because it is really only one of a handful of songs that are memorable off of her debut. (9)

About Time - Nothing special, but nothing deplorable either. You see, it is a song like this that could be so much better if Cassie had applied some soul to her delicate voice. Instead, the song comes out sounding unenthusiastic and dull. (7)

Kiss Me - When I was looking at the booklet that accompanied the disc, I noticed that Destiny's Child (along with a slew of other writers) had come together to write this love song. Then, sure enough I also came to notice why they hadn't recorded it. It's formulaic, boring and soulless to say the least. (5)

Call U Out - With such a such strong and powerfully throbbing opening, I was expecting Cassie to do a little more with this song...She says she is the "illest chick you ever had" but quite honestly I don't believe her. All I'm asking for is a bit of soul! Is that so much to ask for in an R&B artist? (6)

Just One Night - Not that great of a song, bit at least it is one that suits her soft voice. If only it wasn't quite as monotonous, it would have been quite a nice song. I do give it props for incorporating a harp into the mix--it actually sounds nice with the rap laid over it. (6)

Hope You're Behaving (Interlude) - I never understood these interludes in R&B albums especially the ones with phone message recordings. It just gets me question why...? (0)

Now With You - The first slow jam that really and truly works. `Not With You' is a big improvement on `Just On Night' and is only one of a few songs that I get excited to listen to over and over again. It's the perfect song that compliments her soft voice. (9)

Ditto - It's good because it attempts to be a bit different from the other tunes on this album. Maybe having an echoing chorus doesn't make that much of a difference, but it gives the album a bit of character. Unfortunately, I still would have liked to have heard a bit more enthusiasm coming from Cassie's part. But by now, as the songs dwindle down to a mere few, I know it is more of a prayer than a request. (7.5)

What Do U Want - All I have to say to this one is that someone should have given it to Britney Spears before Cassie. Not that I'm endorsing Britney, but this song seems so out of place for her. A song that doesn't compliment her soft voice seems to always come out wrong. Unfortunately, that is 60% of this album. (5)

Miss Your Touch - This is a good song to end the album on. She actually semi-works it. I still can't imagine her feeling the music, but I have to lower my standards a bit to give Cassie the benefit of the doubt. (8)

Description of Cassie

Everyone loves a Cinderella story. In 2006, the glass slipper belongs to Cassie, thanks to her smash debut single "Me & U". Just like the single, her debut album Cassie is infectious, seductive, and deep.
While much has been made of former model Cassie's leap into the R&B ring--the vampy, MySpace-fueled first single "Me & U" topped more than a few best-of-summer lists--almost as much has been made of the wispiness of her voice. But what those who have stopped straddling the fence know is that the pillow-lipped beauty makes up for what she lacks in vocal power with an abundance of less obvious musical proficiencies: Cassie's a master of sass, a guru of guile. Hear it not only on the mildly menacing and seriously thrilling "Me & U," but also on "Long Way 2 Go," a merciless tease aimed at an amorous man who really ought to have known better. The rest of this brief disc bumps along on the greatness of its beats. Master blaster and producer Ryan Leslie (also Cassie's beau, it's rumored) strings together a minicourse on sampling as he slyly dips from old-school jazz to disco to vintage flamenco. Credit Cassie, though, for concocting a whole lotta 'tude. R&B has a whispery new minx. -Tammy La Gorce
