Music Review: Wonderful

Having left Dunhill Records, which never quite knew to do with her and plugged her in to endless bubblegum material far beneath her talents but chart-guaranteed, Cass moved to RCA, where she got the royal treatment. Much more mature songs, an excellent variety of genres, high-quality arrangements and exemplary production brought Cass to a whole new level on record. I always felt on Dunhill that after the Mamas and the Papas era she sounded nasal. But on RCA she seems centered in her intonation again, and certainly addresses her material with the sensibility of a major-league, mature artist. At the time of her death, she was on the cusp of a major career resurgence, clearly moving from folk and rock into a much broader arena as an all-around star. She had tremendous appeal as a personality, she was all over T.V., she guest hosted the "Tonight" Show and she had the right people in her corner to give her the best possible showcase. I'm not sure I ever wanted her to move from folk and rock, because that was where she proved most significant, but like other people, I saw her possibilities to build a career that could well into her old age. An old age, tragically, she never got.
