Music Review: Good, but not stunning...

No one can deny that Carrie Underwood has pipes. Also, you can't deny the fact that she is something special as a vocalist. With that said, Carrie does do good with her single, yet I don't think that it is as good as Bo's and I don't think that it is as unique as past singles by Fantasia, Ruben, Clay, or Kelly. There's an "it" factor missing; something to make Carrie really distinctive. Her voice is beautiful, but singing "Independence Day", does she really differentiate herself from country legend Martina McBride? Does she live up to the critic darling Shania Twain or even modern country newcomer Gretchen Wilson who rocked a mainstream hit "Redneck Woman"? These questions are relevant because Carrie will be competing with a slew of country-elite vocalists, especially the females.
"Inside Your Heaven" shows Carries pop sensibilities, and hence I think it will appeal more than "Independence Day" to the pop crowd. She still adds her country-tinged nuances and makes the song her own, but that whole idea is toned down on this song, which could be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it. This is a very enjoyable listen, much more so than it was on American Idol. However, while Carrie sings this well, I still am missing the emotion I felt when I heard Kelly Clarkson sing "A Moment Like This", Ruben sing "Flying Without Wings", and Fantasia singing the emotional, moving "I Believe". Despite that, she does a fine job on it. Nothing to grumble about.
"Independence Day" I was actually disappointed with. I felt Carrie sang this better live on idol than she does on the recording. The choruses are fine, but the verses seem very uninspired from some reason. I never thought that she sung any of her remakes like the original country singers though, but that is a tough feat anyway. I felt this was sort of a weak track. Not bad or horrible in the least. I just think maybe Carrie held back a bit. Could be the arrangement or the production.
Overall, I think Carrie deserves her "props" for a decent single, yet I hope that Carrie delivers more "oomph" and more emotion, maybe even grit to her upcoming album. I think that the producers especially need to make sure that Carrie not only sings pure flowing ballads, but also does uptempo numbers that can rival such songs as "Redneck Woman" and etc. 3 stars for a pretty good start.
