Music Review: The Torch Is Still Lit 30 Years Later!

I was Senior in high school when this album dropped. I was just coming off the thrill of "Jesse" and bought this, the follow-up to the heavily synthesized previous album, "Come Upstairs."
Not only was I surprised to hear a stripped down, lightly orchestrated collection of tunes from the American Standards songbook (A couple of the songs here are original too.), but I have loved this album with all my heart since then. There is something so inherently sad about it which makes it alluring and beautiful. It touches me in places no record ever has. Her version of "I Get Along without You Very Well" is as dark as it is hopeful. Another favorite of mine is "Spring Is Here," which also evokes a sadness that leaves you in your bed watching trees budding outside the window while you relive the disappointment of past loves (somehow). I love Carly Simon. When she sings these kinds of songs, there's a kindred connection many of us can admit to sharing with her. Afterall, haven't we ALL been hurt by love? If you're looking for music that is melancholy (yet relaxing) and something that would help you embrace your own pain after a breakup, this is highly recommended, if not REQUIRED listening. It's 30 years later and I'm still playing "Spring Is Here" every year on March 20th. It's my own little tradition after long, cold New England winters. "Torch" has made that much of an impression on my life since I was sixteen years old (I'm 46 now.) Light some candles, burn some sweet floral incense and take a warm bubblebath with the CD player on "repeat." There's something very cleansing about this album; the tenderness of her delivery is very comforting. Yeah, she runs out of breath a few times and/or goes off key, but hey...it's that kind of a recording and you just pass those breaths/sour notes off as sobs and gasps from a good cry. Some quick facts for you too: It was Carly and NOT Linda Ronstadt NOR Toni Tennille who was the FIRST recording artist (of the day) to record songs from the American Standards songbook. "Torch" presented in 1981, "What's New?" by Rondstadt in 1982 and "More Than You Know" by Tenille in late '82. However, it would be Rondstadt who would garner the MOST commercial success within this genre with all three of her Nelson Riddle collaborations going either Platinum or Gold. Rod Stewart had great success many years later by recording music in the same vein.
