Music Review: Don't believe the preview clips--this is an uncanny, compelling album

I have to confess I found the preview clips off-putting, but we should know by now that Carly isn't an artist that can be packaged into 20 second sound bites. I've just downloaded this and listened all the way through--its a wild ride, pretty mind blowing, Carly embracing her new 'indie' status with force and gusto. The sound is in general harder and more bracing than almost any album she's made before--I was really struck by the new song 'Ain't No Freedom', which sounds like Tom Waits in a particularly bad mood--and I mean that in a good way. The version of 'Anticipation' here is sweeping and dramatic--this is definitely not a production that's going to make much sense in a 20 second clip. It wavers and swells, from sadness to defiance. I'll admit this cut brought tears to my eyes, and I hadn't even had a drink. Carly's line readings are especially sophisticated and canny, and the same words take on complex, new and sometimes darker meanings. 'Never Been Gone' is reworked as a breezy sea shanty--and it does sound like a bunch of friends just spontaneously harmonizing in the pub--it harkens back to sing along nights out and rough and tumble abandon, and invites our own 'but I sound pretty good in the shower' voices to join right in. 'Songbird' is just lovely--I thought (again, blast those clips) that the 'Carly then and now' production would sound gimicky, but in fact her young self singing the first verse and older self singing the second sounds so right its uncanny (my friend, listening to this cut, couldn't tell the difference between the older Carly and the younger). One of the real stand outs is 'You Belong to Me'--it is FIERCE. The acoustic funk arrangement is just about the coolest thing I've heard her do in years, and she sounds unleashed--there is real soul in her call and response outro with John Forte. I'll add something too that hardly gets mentioned--Carly aside (if that's possible), this album is worth it for the musicianship alone. Once again Carly has assembled the strongest possible back up, they give her an intimate yet virtuosic setting to work in. I just enjoyed following the guitars and percussion to unexpected places: the 'You're So Vain' version here is a great example of this stunning guitar work. There's anger, love, inspiration, envy, and the tiniest bit of regret on this record--the voice and lyrics lay bare all of this: someone who has lived (and is still living) an extraordinary life. I was afraid this 'Carly in her garage' sound was going to endanger her reputation--I never should have doubted, this burnishes the legend, shows what an extraordinary and wonderfully eccentric talent she is. Carly is indie and unleashed--prepare to have your expectations shaken up... this is no Moonlight Serenade.
Description of Never Been Gone
The new album revisits songs originally written throughout Carly's extensively long and productive career. With new largely acoustic arrangements, the CD was recorded at home on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Carly's son Benjamin Taylor was the originator of the idea and Carly willingly (though sometimes hesitatingly) complied and lived up to the dare. Carly, Benjamin and the rest of the producers, known as Paphiopedilium , chose the songs, most of which were Carly's best-known and commercially successful. In the CD's generous liner notes is an explanation not only of the word Paphiopedilium , but an explanation of the reworking of each of the songs. Carly hopes that even without these notes, the music will speak for itself.We are proud to give Carly's fans old and new, a brand new look at ten of her best loved, well-known songs as well as two never-heard-before surprises.
