Music Review: Sexy Carly!

God, this woman can do no wrong! After quite the run of hit singles and albums throughout the 70's, Carly begins a new decade as a sexy siren. Of course we all knew how sexy she was with the album "Playing Possum," but she pulled out all stops on this one!
The first single, "Jesse," was quite the surprise "hit" in the summer of 1980 and this album finds her in a funky, "New Wave" kind of place as in the title cut and "Them." The rest, like most of her previous recordings, find her in the same, delectable folky-rock, storyteller vein. "Come Upstairs," despite its strong opening single (which fared very well at Pop radio,) somehow was not promoted adequately enough by her (at that time) NEW record company (Warner Brothers.) Perhaps they felt that the name alone would sell records, but such was not the case. Be that as it may, this one came in at a time where big hair was the fashion norm, Disco was fading and Rock was coming into the musical forefront. The greatest thing about Miss Carly is that she always takes chances. This is more than evident on this stellar album of early 80's female sex appeal set to music. In the fall of 1987, I met Carly at Tower Records in Boston (a record signing.) You BET I brought THIS album with me for my coveted autograph which reads, "I'll always cut fresh flowers for you!" Carly was sweet, beautiful and got a total kick out of writing that little sentiment for me. I'll cherish it forever!
