Music Review: Good album, but lacks intensity of debut

This is a good album with interesting music that is fresh and well-played. If this were the first Captain Beyond album I had ever heard, I might even give it 5 stars. But I can't help but compare this to the band's debut album which I found incredibly intense and exciting. So, I have to give this 4 stars just to differentiate them. But it is a good album and I'm glad that I got it. I'll be getting Dawn Explosion next.
The main differences on this album are: the replacement of exceptional drummer Bobby Caldwell with Marty Rodriguez , the expansion to a 6 man band with addition of keyboardist Reese Wynans and percussionist Guille Garcia, the heavy usage of Latin rhythms, and the absence of the longer, interconnected suites that dominated the first record.
While Rod Evans sings well, I feel that the recording of his vocals did not give him the same presence that he had on the first album. Guitarist Rhino still gives us plenty of great riffs and solos, both acoustic and electric. Unfortunately, Lee Dorman's bass is not as prominent in the expanded lineup. The rest of the band play their parts competently, but they don't really light any sparks.
It is interesting that all the songs on this album were written by Lee Dorman while the songs on the first album had been co-written by Rod Evans and Bobby Caldwell (who left before this album was recorded). Evans did participate in song-writing on the first 3 Deep Purple albums, so it is strange that he did not contribute to the songs on this album. Note that Dorman did co-write songs with members of his former band, Iron Butterfly. Perhaps this suggests that Caldwell had been the primary writer of the songs on the first album? Or that Dorman and Evans could not write well together? Or that Evans was frustrated and unwilling to put in more effort beyond recording his vocal tracks? Note that the Deep Purple Appreciation Society website claims that Evans flew home from Georgia to Los Angeles in the middle of the recording session and had to be persuaded to finish his vocals at a Los Angeles studio.
Many of the songs have psychedelic lyrics. The title track is unusual in that the music sounds light-hearted and upbeat but the lyrics end in depression repeating the phrase "nothing left to live for". "Distant Sun" and "Everything's a Circle" express similar frustration: "Can't you see that I'm living in confusion and I can't find no way out" and "What is wrong with this world of mine/Falling in a spiral". So, maybe Lee Dorman was also depressed about the state of the band or the world?
If you don't expect a repeat of Captain Beyond's debut album and are willing to listen to this album and accept it on its own terms, I think you'll enjoy it.
