Music Review: Certainly not definitive

In trying to avoid saying exactly what has already been written here, I see only two reasons for owning this:
1. You are a devoted Don Van Vliet fan and own every one of his studio albums. As such, you have to know the entire story, including the two curious missteps taken circa 1974 with producer Andy DiMartino (this being the first of the pair).
2. You find 'difficult' Beefheart masterpieces like Trout Mask Replica and Doc At The Radar Station 'hard to take.' If so, these relatively bland offerings may be just what hits the spot.
I fall into the Reason #1 scenario. I've tried for 35 years to find some merit in Unconditionally Guaranteed and its quick followup, Bluejeans & Moonbeams. Both have a few decent tracks (Upon The My-Oh-My, I Got Love On My Mind) possibly worthy of inclusion on a Beefheart compilation (just to represent these albums if nothing else), but both feature some fairly awful tracks as well (Sugar Bowl, ugh). And Unconditionally Guaranteed is only 31 or 32 minutes long, although maybe that's actually a blessing.
As far as the more conventional and 'commercial' Beefheart albums go, the one to really start with is this album's predecessor, Clear Spot, issued in 1972 (the last of his four Warner Bros. albums). Produced by Ted Templeman (frequent producer of the Doobie Brothers), Clear Spot mixes commercial straightforward material ('Too Much Time') with more eccentric material ('Big Eyed Beans From Venus'). By comparison 'Unconditionally Guaranteed' really is too compromised, with Van Vliet seemingly comfortable merely being a singer (there were some record company people who thought his voice had 'hit potential' but not if he was going to keep doing the 'weird freaky stuff.' This was his first for Mercury, so he had to contend with new business peoples' ideas.) For me, this album is ultimately merely a curiosity for the occasional listen, as well as an interesting casualty of the perennial 'art vs. commerce' struggle.
