Music Review: Not For Everyone

If you ask my friends to describe my music personality, they will probably say extremely eclectic and "he likes literally everything." I listen to all types of music from Rock to Blues to Country to Jazz to Classical to Opera to World Music to Folk and all of the sub genres in between. Perhaps it is why I secured two radio shows playing great music that's not played very often on the air.
I had heard some of Captain Beefheart's other stuff before and thought it was pretty decent. I had actually played some of it on my radio shows. Upon looking at the Top 500 albums by Rolling Stone magazine, this popped up somewhere in the top 60s. I didn't agree with the list, but the albums before it were fairly good, so I thought I'd check out Trout Mask Replica
I listened once, and once is all I will listen to it. Perhaps it's my fault I'm a classically trained singer and can't stand horrible singers, but in this album Beefheart really really tested my patience. When he wasn't almost speaking the words, he was often times flat on his pitches or not even close to on top of them. Now, that's usually not a problem if it fits the music, but unfortunately there is a severe lack of any sort of melody in most, not all, but most of the songs. The songs seem to be using weird intervals maybe 4th's and 7th's..which is fine depending how they are used. Unfortunately, when put in sequence in many of these songs, they just don't make sense.
Usually for my radio show I can find ONE gem in a horrible album to play. It has happened a lot. This might be the first time I've yet to find a single song to play on my show from a horrible album. What's even worse is that this album has 28 songs on it.
This album is DEFINITELY not for everybody. If you like Avant Garde music or weird music, go ahead and get this album. If you can't stand songs that sound like they're straight out of a cartoon on some hard drug then please save yourself some time and money and don't get this album. Possibly the worst album I have ever heard. Thank god Captain Beefheart has some good songs that are not on this album.
