Music reviews of Bloodthirst

Music Review: What you've come to expect
Rating: 3 Stars

Anyone who is a fan of Cannibal Corpse knows that they do not deviate from a specific musical formula: brutality, ultra speed, and gore-laden lyrics. As said, it should come as no surprise that Cannibal Corpse's seventh release, "Bloodthirst," follows along the same path as their previous albums. However, "Bloodthirst" has moments where it shines as well as those where it disappoints. First the highlights:

1) George Fisher brings a welcomed change for the band with his brutal vocals. Don't get me wrong, Chris Barnes is a good death metal vocalist. However, it was time for a change as "The Bleeding" clearly indicated that Barnes' vocals were moving away from the brutal death metal growls which graced previous releases, toward a more discernable sound (i.e., the listener was able to understand the lyrics without much effort). In addition, Barnes' high ranged pitches were VERY poor; this was one dimension of his vocals that he was never quite able to master. Fisher does not suffer from this flaw, as he surpasses Barnes in many areas. Most notably is the fact that his vocals carry far more energy. Though he is unable to hit ultra-low growls, his vocal style adds a new energetic dimension to the songs which almost make them sound as though they are faster than previous material. In addition, Fisher is able to add some decent vocals on the high-end range as well.

2) "Bloodthirst" offers somewhat of a different guitar sound as compared to previous releases. Here again, this is welcomed, especially given the fact that Cannibal Corpse is not known for their willingness to try many things new. Though only on a small level, adding a different guitar sound on "Bloodthirst" provides some evidence that Cannibal Corpse is willing to experiment with a slightly different sound. This is especially important given that some change in sound should be made to accommodate the newer vocalist. For this aspect alone, Cannibal Corpse should be applauded.

3) The production of the album is solid, as each of the instruments blend together nicely without one overshadowing the other. On "Bloodthirst," Cannibal Corpse utilized Colin Richardson as the producer (rather than the legendary Scott Burns).

Despite the strengths of "Bloodthirst," it suffers from some fairly significant flaws. Specifically:

1) "Bloodthirst" offers nothing new. As mentioned earlier, it is the "typical" Cannibal Corpse album. Before even picking up the album, I was able to predict the elements that would be present on "Bloodthirst." First, it would have a gory cover, second it would have gory lyrics, and third, the guitar riffs would consist mainly of power chords played in a rapid fashion. Unfortunately, I was not wrong. One of the worst criticisms that a band can endure is that they are predictable....and Cannibal Corpse is very predictable. Granted, no one expects Cannibal Corpse to do a 360 and offer up deep and introspective lyrics. But some change is actually very beneficial to the survival of a band, and is integral to a band remaining relevant. All one has to do is look at the current elite death metal acts (e.g., Behemoth, Decapitated, Nile, Hate Eternal, etc.) to understand that gore/shock lyrics are dated and, for the most part, a thing of the past.

2) The guitar styling of "Bloodthirst" is disappointing. As any fan knows (and lets be honest), Cannibal Corpse was never renowned as a band of accomplished musicians (perhaps with the exception Alex Webster who is an amazing bassist). The guitar riffs are actually quite catchy upon initial listening. However, their simplicity makes the album wear out fairly fast. By this I mean that "Bloodthirst" is an album that the listener will likely eventually become bored with.

In conclusion, long-time fans of the band will love this album. My recommendation to any fan of Cannibal Corpse is simple...buy this album, you will not be disappointed. However, fans of extreme music who are more selective should probably pass on "Bloodthirst." As mentioned earlier, it is nothing groundbreaking and will certainly not leave anyone in awe.
