Music Review: this album is just as good as an early grunge album

With the yadda yadda yadda chatter about how Candlebox was not as good as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc, this group still has frequent airtime in my playlist.
My brother owned Lucy which I think he bought it because of "Simple Lessons" but the self-title debut is more listener friendly because of the smash hits "Far Behind" and "You"....really the only 2 songs that get any radio time these days.
I first want to start this review w/ my favorite song on the album "Change." An epic six and half minute story of moving on w/ the past all 'wriiiitteeeeen doooown!' The lyrics are outstanding, Kevin's voice is great, the guitars are excellent. Really this song seeps through your skull every time you listen to it and should always be played at least twice every time the cd is in rotation in your player. I believe it was a radio single as I heard it back in the day.
Next we come to "You" which is another personal favorite of mine. This song only has one way to listen to it and that is very loud. The greatness about this song is that it is so in your face w/ the lyrics and just like "Change" is very meaningful. I like to think of it as a pissed off song w/ passion. Either way, I crank up the knob if I ever hear it on the radio.
Not to be overshadowed, "Don't You" is a great opener to the album that outweighs any hard rock song today. Also "No Sense" is a great moody/dark song w/ a great guitar solo in there somewhere.
With "Far Behind" I really don't need to say much. The pinnacle song of the band that launched them into the mainstream of rock and still remains the band's most played and downloaded song. This song is what any non-fan will know, but what they might not know is how great the other songs are.
"Blossom" is somewhat of a weak spot, but only with the lyrics may sound somewhat cheesy 'you will blossom every day' and is almost the opposite of every song as it is kind of like a love song, whereas the others are about hate, revenge, and moving on.
The song "Arrow" is a fast uptempo song, and also the shortest at just over 3 minutes followed by the longest song "Rain" at about 7 minutes. "Rain" is more of a slow dark jazzy song for the first half, but gradually picks up for a more in your face rock towards the end.
What makes "Mother's Dream" come out of your is how Kevin forces out a hard rushed line of lyrics w/ some very dirty guitar riffs.
A popular song amongst avid fans lies w/ "Cover Me" which I believe did get some airtime. It's esentially the 2nd ballad of the album following "Far Behind" but with more demanding lyrics and a slightly slower tempo.
All bands should take note on how to end an album from Candlebox, b/c "He Calls Home" is perfect for a finale. Usually last songs are slower, less in your face rock, and somewhat acoustical which this song fits that bill.
Really this is a complete album from start to finish. I wouldn't say it's as polished as Happy Pills, but definately should be your first Candlebox album. Ignore the fact of not being commercially successful as other bands in 90's grunge era, but if you want to hear good rock, then Candlebox is no flop.
