Music Review: This is where they lost it

In the early 70s, Can released a remarkable string of albums, beginning with "Soundtracks." Even after vocalist Damo Suzuki left the group, they continued to ride the momentum with "Soon Over Babaluma" and "Landed." After that, the quality started to decline quickly. I think "Landed" was the last great Can album, and it wasn't great all the way through, as it ended with a long, formless instrumental piece that was appropriately titled "Unfinished." The pop stylings of some tracks on that album were taken farther with the follow-up, "Flow Motion," which, I think, succeeded on its own terms as a lighthearted Can album with a tropical island feel.
That brings us to "Saw Delight," which is the first one that you don't need to own. The band could still groove, and new bassist Rosko Gee fits in very well. Unfortunately, there is little of interest here in terms of composition. "Don't Say No" is just a reworking of "Moonshake." It would be fine as a live piece or as a bonus track, but here it is the opening track on an original album, which is a very bad sign. In fact, the problems begin even before you put the disc in your player, as you contemplate the ugly cover art and lame title.
Musically, everything is tightly played and very groovy, but nothing stands out. Even the guy who wrote the liner notes to this 2006 reissue is forced to admit that the album's 15-minute centerpiece, "Animal Waves," doesn't really go anywhere. And "Fly By Night," the silly pop song that closes the album, is borderline embarrassing. It's a shame to see a great band descend into mediocrity, and Can's decline would continue after this release. So if you own all of the great and near-great albums that preceded this one, you may want to quit while you're ahead. I give it three stars because at least it's listenable, but two and a half would be more fitting.
