Music Review: Brilliant Recording!

When I first heard this recording it immediately separated itself from other recordings of piano concertos. Apart from the flawless and careful technical abilities of Roge, this duo does an excellent job in interpreting Saint-Saens's music. The excellent use of dynamic contrast in between different passages really brings forth the emotional content of the concertos. Each note Roge plays is clear and concise - not muddled and unclear. Even the fast passages (ie Concerto 1, 3rd movement) come out very elegantly and silk-smooth.
I also like Roge's choice of piano for these recordings. The piano used is much brighter (like some Yamahas) than the ones used in most recordings of say, Mozart or Beethoven. This is especially true in the first movement of Concerto No. 1, as well as the finale of the 3rd movement. I have two other sets with similar-sounding pianos: Earl Wild's Chopin Etudes (Chopin: The Complete Etudes) and Ashkenazy's Complete Chopin Piano Works (Chopin: The Piano Works [Box Set]). In my opinion the piano chosen for a recording can make a huge difference in how the final piece sounds to the listener. On my 5.1 surround the piano actually sounds like it's literally right in front of you, while the orchestra is spread more to the side channels (while it is recorded in stereo, I use Winamp with the Andrewlabs ATSurround plugin to convert it into surround). For some people the piano might be too loud compared to the rest of the orchestra, but I prefer this since it is the solo instrument.
All in all this set of complete concertos is certainly one of my all-time favorite albums, and believe me I have many favorite "complete" albums.

There is a lot of really enjoyable music here. I remember organizing a performance of the Fifth Piano Concerto (subtitled "The Egyptian") when I was repertoire committee chairman for a local community orchestra. We found it not only very playable for all of us amateurs in the orchestra, but it simply blew the audience away. It's a real find. Both the Second and Fourth concertos have been popular favorites for more than a century, but they seemed to have vanished sight in the past couple of decades. It was our loss, but no more. And the Fifth Piano Concerto, even when played by amateurs, can blow an audience away. At two discs for the price of one, these fine performances offer listeners a great chance to know this charming and vivacious music at little or no risk at all.
