Music Review: Excellent performances of interesting music

This is a very interesting release. Camargo Guarnieri is probably Brazil's greatest composer after Villa-Lobos (whose music Guarnieri's doesn't really resemble very much), but until this series came along was seriously underrepresented on disc. And he turns out to have been a very good symphonist with a true grasp of structure as well as orchestral color and genuine melodic inspiration. The style is rhythmically dynamic neo-classicism with an emphasis on form and national coloration. Stylistically I'd say Honegger and Roy Harris might be the closest points of comparison, but the style is sufficiently personal not to really resemble anyone else.
The two symphonies on this disc are rather similar in structure with glittering and motorically driven, rather abrasively dissonant outer movements and a longer reflective short movement. The second has something of a `fantastic' atmosphere, a clear structure and strongly contrasted textural and motivic figures. The third is structurally very satisfying (the return of the theme from the slow opening of the first movement as the coda of the last movement is splendidly realized), generally busy and with a delightful scherzo at the center of the slow movement. The Abertura Concertant is written in the same style, but is lighter and more immediately catchy.
The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under John Neschling sounds like a world-class orchestra (which they might very well be), providing performances full of dynamic vitality, strong but subtly nuanced colors and in general dazzling technical brilliance and boldly shaped rhythmic patterns. The recorded sound is as close to perfection as one could possibly imagine. Thoroughly recommended.
