Music reviews of Camargo Guarnieri: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4; Abertura Festiva

Music Review: An interesting release of some interesting music
Rating: 4 Stars

This is a very interesting release. Camargo Guarnieri is probably Brazil's greatest composer after Villa-Lobos (whose music Guarnieri's doesn't really resemble very much), but until this series came along he was seriously underrepresented on disc. And he turns out to have been a splendid symphonist with a true grasp of structure as well as orchestral color and genuine melodic inspiration. The style is rhythmically dynamic neo-classicism with an emphasis on form and national coloration. Stylistically I'd say Honegger and Roy Harris might be the closest points of comparison, but the style is sufficiently personal not to really resemble anyone else.

That said, I'd urge anyone interested in the composer to start with the second and third symphonies by the same performers on the same label. The two symphonies here are fine works, but not quite on the same level. The first symphony from 1944 is still a mature work, rhythmically complex and driven and very contrapuntal with a strong formal profile. The reflective slow movement is probably the highlight, but the symphony as a whole is very attractive if not ultimately very memorable. The fourth symphony is relatively brief (at 20 minutes), and again it is the slow movement which is most impressive. The work as a whole exhibits Guarnieri's masterly orchestration and vivacious motoric rhythms, elegant melodic figure and formal mastery, even if the end result is perhaps a little greyer than its two predecessors. The Abertura Festiva is a brilliant, lighter work and huge fun.

The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra under John Neschling sounds like a world-class orchestra (which they might very well be), providing performances full of dynamic vitality, strong but subtly nuanced colors and in general dazzling technical brilliance and boldly shaped rhythmic patterns. The recorded sound is as close to perfection as one could possibly imagine. Recommended.
