Music Review: Light the Bonfire, Man!

You know, it's like heading to your friend's place in the country on Friday night. Sooner or later--usually after several twelve packs of dead soldiers litter the ground--you'll be out in the back pasture dragging up dead tree limbs to the fire pit. Limbs, big limbs, bigger limbs. Then a gallon or two of diesel, a match, and you're good to go. But, you know, some guy--all drunked up . . . and that means DRUNKED up given how you drink already on a regular basis--will be saying the fire isn't big enough so he'll start dribbling a glass full of gasoline on it to see if he can get it really going. That's when you see the people who are typically considered to be the idjit babies out there backing up and you know there is real trouble coming. A stumble, a fall, and all of a sudden there's a mushroom cloud of orange flames shooting up into the sky. While all this is going on, you know somebody's got their car pulled up and the windows open and probably the trunk open so the stereo can be cranked to the maximum and the drunks sway to the pounding beat, silhouetted by the greasy haze of gas fumes and heat and chaos in front of them, watching that one poor idjit baby begging someone to take him to the hospital for his burned hand/arm while the most sympathy he can get is somebody saying, Hey man, get some ice out of the ice chest already and stop your sobbing.
This is the album you want playing on that car stereo: vocals channeled courtesy of Jack White, rhythm section teleported from the Tattoo You era Stones, and guitars that are equal parts Johnny Thunders and Dave Edmunds. Is the whole greater than the sum of its parts? Probably not. But, then again, the sum, such as it is, will do the trick just fine in the right situation.

Cage the Elephant are a band of syncopated groove- oriented Rock 'N' Rollers whose goal is to convey power to their audience through their music without the interference of too much background information, preferring to let their music be their message.
