Music reviews of Cuatro Caminos

Music Review: Roc N Espanol Chameleons
Rating: 5 Stars

A new Cafe Tacuba disc is an event worth looking forward to and this CD does not dissapoint. It is nearly impossible to get an accurate pulse on the band that changes nearly as often as it's lead singer Elgfego Buendia changes his moniker. The Tacubistas throw in some surprise elements to keep their fans guessing. This is a 360 degree turn from "Reves/Soy;" the totaly experimental sound is gone. There is a beautiful counterpoint in songs that will make you(only if you are new to Cafe Tacuba) wonder if it is the same band playing. For example on track two, entitled "Eo," you'd think you were listening to some quirky 80's band like Oingo Bongo or the B-52's. At other times they have the youthful street smarts savy of Talking Heads in their hey day. With it's hyper beat and bizarre stacatto vocals you'll be pogoing after ten seconds. The next track is "Mediodia" and it's suddenly a dreamy sequence of happy days in the park that has a "Strawberryfields Forever" Beatleesque sound to it. It may be a bit premature to compare this band to the Beatles but if there was ever a Latino band with the potential, based on their current track record of outstanding releases, this is the band. For my money Cafe Tauba are the Mexican Beatles of a new generation, now whether they have the legs or longevitivy to pull it off completely is another thing. They definitely are innovative and have the talent to make a run for it. Expect the unexpected when listeing to any Cafe Tacuba disc and this is no exception. The fact that Argentinean mega producer Gustavo Santaolalla is behind many of the songs on this disc only adds lustre to a raw yet highly polished jewel. Santaolalla's influence permeates this disc. The band has a magnificent diversity not found with too many bands. Take "Eres" a beautiful love song of sorts that has pop qualities, old school roots and urban charm for the 21st century. Their lyrics are the type that touch you; it is like a caress for the mind. During the love song "Eres" keyboarist Emmanuel del Real steps out from behind his instrument to take a rare lead vocals and laments, "Eres lo que mas quiero en este mundo, eso eres, mi pensamiento mas profundo, tambien eres, tan solo dime lo que hago, aqui mi tienes"(You are what I most want in this life, that's what you are, my most profound thoughts, that's what you are too, just tell me what to do, you have me here). It is this type of sensitivity that plays counterpoint throughout this disc to songs that are more on the playful side of life. There are several songs that lie somewhere between like "Puntos Cardinales" that are happy and upbeat, sad and reflective at once. "Amor y dulzura, fuerza y coraje cuatro puntos cardinales con los que navega, y cuando se pierde porque siente miedo olvida el pasado, no piensa en futuro y eso es suficiente" (Love and sweetness, strength and anger, four principle points with which I navigate, I don't think in the future and that is sufficient). The Tacubistas play with your mind, your heart and soul. Like in life they are unpredictable but always as in life, a joy to experience. "Hoy Es" pretty much sums up the feeling of this super disc. The song has qualities that are universal and you'd think it is a modern version of "A Day in the Life" because the song has the simple yet profound elements only found in great songs."Hoy es, tal vez hoy es un dia especial, lo puedes escuchar, hoy es el dia mas espectacular, el mas bello que hay" (Today is, possibly it is a special day, you can listen, today is the most spectacular day, the most beautiful that there is).I've taken the liberty to loosely translate some of the lyrics for non-Spanish speakers so that you can understand that besides the amazing music there is substance to this band. Their latest disc proves this once again that Cafe Tacuba are confident in their abilities, looking back and ever forward . If you are new to Cafe Tacuba jump right in and get this disc. You cannot go wrong with any of their discs, each is a work of art, a unique part of the greater whole that is Cafe Tacuba, the greatest contemporary Mexican band in Roc N Espanol.

Description of Cuatro Caminos

CAFE TACUBA CUATRO CAMINOS
Cafe Tacuba come straight out of Mexico City with a spicy blend of rock en Espanol, with Jamaican ska/reggae and African-American hip-hop sonic seasonings. And unlike their counterparts, they've managed to keep the critics, record companies, and their fans happy. This CD, which translates as Four Ways, is their first full release since 1999. Lead guitarist/vocalist Elfego Buendía, keyboardist Emmanuel Del Real, bassist Enrique Rangel and guitarist Joselo Rangel--along with R.E.M. and Beck percussionists Victor Indrizio and Joey Waronker--deliver a more raw, stripped-down sound compared to their critically acclaimed recordings Re and Avalancha de Éxitos. Their long-time producer Gustavo Santaolalla is at the helm, but on this go- 'round, the quartet also works with producers Dave Fridmann and Andrew Weiss, who both manned the boards for the bands, Ween, Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev. From the high-powered video/single "Eo (el sonidero)" and "¿Qué pasará?" with special guest vocalist Rubén Albarrán (a.k.a. Elfego Buendía), to the philosophical "Mediodía," these tracks show that Cafe Tacuba is moving away from their alternative phase into a mature, Steely Dan type of mainstream sound. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
