Music Review: One Of The HEAVIEST Bands On This Side Of The Pond...

OK, so they weren`t Cream, the Jeff Beck Group or Led Zep (and I`m only referring to the 1st two Zep LP`s, after that, I could care less, except for 'Black Dog'),but these guys and Mountain were about the best hard/acid rockers we had here in the states at that particular time in musical history. It`s tragic Beck went out and nearly offed himself in a near-fatal car wreck, or both he and Rod Stewart would have completed the original line-up of this band, and we`ll always wonder what could have been, but I digress. Cactus was a force to be reckoned with, they practically cornered the market with their patented brand of badass ballsy, bluesy, boogie-based Acid Rock. Folks like to compare them to Savoy Brown or Foghat, which is a joke, they could kick those bands asses in their sleep after a night of hard drinking and drugging, which was part and parcel at that time. This Anthology is a refreshing look at the formative years of Cactus, which includes almost all of the first LP, pretty much the best of the second, but omits a few from their 3rd LP, 'Restrictions' I personally enjoy. Great covers of Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf tracks ('Evil' stills sends shivers down my spine to this day), ferocious fretwork, Bonhamesque drumming, bass playing that never supports or locks in w/ the drums yet is still amazing to hear, and vocals that rend, rip and wrangle the life from a dead corpse are all on vivid display. Sound grisly enuff for ya? Then stop reading this and bring this mother home today...
