Music reviews of The Byrds - Greatest HitsMusic Review: Excuse me 5 StarsI just dropped by to purchase a new disc because my old one is useless for obvious reasons. At least I hope the reason is obvious. I'm 46 and am more likely to look at people as having or not experienced a sound by a particular band. I have had the opportunity to listen to the Byrds since the tender age of 10. They may have had prior experiences with other future "popular" artist's. And it is a fact that many of them went on to express themselves individually as well with other artists that any Byrds fan would be familiar with. In my work I have had the great fortune to listen to teenagers express their likes and dislikes of many of my favorite artists. What has always been the most amazing comment has to do with a group they liked, in this case the Byrds. That comment had less or nothing to do with who the byrds were influenced by than the fact that they liked the Byrds because, "they had their own sound." Now some of us, especially my age group, could say this comment is due to a lack of experience with listening to other music of that time. Believe me, that is not the case. These young adults have taken the time to listen to decades of music. We're not talking about one or two hours a week. Think about yourself at their age. If you were like me, you might sneek a transistor radio with a single earphone hidden beneath the long locks of hair on my head, in one or two of my most boring classes in H.S.. After school there was the 8 track in the car and at home, the stereo. For those of you who have stuck with me this far and may be asking yourself, "What's your point." Here it is. The Byrds may have used Dylan's words and they may or may not have been influenced by the Beatles. But when I hear their music, I hear their own sound. It is timeless, deeply moving, beautiful, sometimes amusing and without a doubt unforgetable. There are so many "kids" out there who haven't experienced the Byrds. Do them and yourself a favor and introduce them. You never know what you may learn in return. I know have "Everclear," "Tonic," "DaDa," "Son Volt," among many other so called "alternative" groups that younger people are listening today, simply because that's what they and their peers hear on their favorite radio station. The Byrds greatest hits compilation is a gathering of music on one disc is hard to come by in any so called genre. Buy it. Then share it with someone who is too young to have heard of it. You know who that individual or group is that will benefit from listening and you may hear later saying, "wow, David Crosby used to play music with Neil Young, the Grandfather of Grundge!" Finally, Those of you who have not picked up on Roger McGuinn's, "Live From Mars." 17 tracks done live in a small venue with McGuinn introducing each song with a story worth hearing. I just looked at the liner notes and it mentions, "play this album for your kid's. Funny. I had never read that before. Besides, my kids have heard it and have their own copies now. In closing, this "review" was not meant to be disrespectful to anyone. Especially those who put a strong belief in who artists are influenced by. Thanks for your time. Now back to Dan Fogleberg. You remember him, right? "Part of the Plan,' back in the mid '70's. Oh yeah, that's a different review. Later.Description of The Byrds - Greatest HitsOriginally released in 1967, this landmark greatest hits collection includes "Mr. Tambourine Man," "I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better," "Turn! Turn! Turn!", "All I Really Want To Do," "Eight Miles High," "So You Want To Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" and "My Back Pages," as well as the bonus songs "It Won't Be Wrong," "Set You Free This Time" and "Have You Seen Her Face."No Track Information Available Media Type: CD Artist: BYRDS Title: GREATEST HITS Street Release Date: 03/30/1999 Genre: ROCK/POP The 12-string electric guitar may never recover. As long as there are baby boomers roaming the earth, its airy jangle will signify psychedelic innocence and optimism refracted through the peculiar light of mid-'60s Los Angeles. With Roger McGuinn leading, the Byrds kicked off American rock history with a merger of Bob Dylan's words and the Beatles' melodic energy. The results are here: "Mr. Tambourine Man," "The Bells of Rhymney," and "Eight Miles High" still jump off the airwaves. The midpoint between Dylan and the Beatles is a one-of-a-kind place, where optimism and innocence still sound smart. --Steve Tignor Classic Rock CDs |
