Music Review: Bryn in top form for Christmas

If you are already familiar with the music of Bryn Terfel, this Christmas album will sound exactly how you expect it to sound. The booklet contains full lyrics, all in English even for those songs not performed in English.
The main disc contains fifteen tracks, all sung in English except two songs. El nacimiento (The birth), which features Mexican tenor Rolando Vilazon, is sung in Spanish. O Jesulein zart (O gentle little Jesus) is sung in German. Of the English tracks, there are two John Rutter compositions (Shepherd's pipe carol, Candlelight carol), a traditional Irish song (Wexford carol) and a traditional Austrian song (Still, still, still) that is common on German Christmas albums but which I rarely see on British or American albums.
The single taken from the album is White Christmas, which is actually a duet with Bing Crosby, created using Bing's original version as a basis. I have mixed feelings about recordings created this way, but I enjoy the Elvis Presley Christmas Duets album, so I know that they can be entertaining. So it is here. Whereas most such duets, including on the Elvis album just mentioned, cut out some of the original vocals and replace them with the new vocals, this duet retains most, perhaps all of, the whole original recording but adds Bryn's vocals, so he has to harmonize with Bing. I understand that Bryn found recording his parts difficult and he may well think it would have been easier to record a solo version, but he got it right in the end and it was well worth the effort. A solo version of White Christmas by Bryn would sound great too, but wouldn't generate the publicity that the duet with Bing created.
The remaining tracks on this CD, including another song of Austrian origin, should be familiar to one and all. Even these (O come all ye faithful, In the bleak midwinter, O holy night, Away in a manger, Mary's boy child, Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Silent night, What child is this) sound a little different with Bryn singing them.
The ten-track Welsh bonus disc enhances the album. It contains three songs not featured on the English disc. None of them are originals, but I don't remember hearing any of them before in any language. Tua Bethlehem dorf (To Bethlehem) features soprano Gwawr Edwards together with Only Men Aloud. The other two obscurities are Nadolig? Pwy a wyr? (Christmas? Who knows?) and Gwyl y Baban (The baby's day). All of them sound great and I hope to hear English versions of these songs one day. The other seven songs, all otherwise familiar, sound great in Welsh, even though I don't understand the language. Hearing these same songs in both English and Welsh may help those who are learning the Welsh language, although I doubt if the translations are exact; song translations rarely are because of the need to make the music work. In any case, this album came along about 18 years too late to be of any help to John Redwood.
Bryn Terfel's record label were keen for him to record a Christmas album, but Bryn was initially doubtful about the idea. He was worried that it could end up sounding cheesy, but those fears proved to be totally unfounded. Bryn eventually agreed to the idea on certain conditions, the main one being that he could include a Welsh bonus disc. Once he had committed himself to a Christmas album, Bryn certainly gave it maximum effort and this album will bring much pleasure to Bryn's fans around the world, myself among them.

Other guests are the tenor Rolando Villazón who joined in for the beautiful Spanish Christmas song "El nacimento", as well as the brilliant Welsh harpist Catrin Finch.
Bryn's favorite international and Welsh carols and songs are played brilliantly in new and original arrangements by Mack Wilberg (music director of Mormon Tabernacle Choir) and Chris Hazell. The exciting arrangements for such well-known carols makes this the perfect soundtrack for the holidays.
