Music reviews of Frantic

Music Review: It's Not Old, It'sTimeless
Rating: 5 Stars

Bryan Ferry has spent his entire career being misunderstood or ignored by most, even it seems by some of his so called fans. First of all Mr. Ferry does not need to rely on the current gimmicks (which tend to get dated very quickly anyway)that a lesser artist like Bowie for example does. Part of the reason for this is that Ferry himself helped invent (30 years ago in Roxy Music ) much of what the musically uneducated masses "think" is so revolutionary about the sounds of now. Ferry has stated in the press that he despises RAP "music" and thankfully there is none of that awful influence here. Lets also look at another important fact. HE IS NOW ALMOST 60 YEARS OLD. So I think we can forgive him if he does not feel the need to sound "current" ( and why should he when what is now considered current will sound dated next week). The man is still light years ahead of his time. I want to respond to some of the criticism here.

1. I disagree with the use of "it sounds like the 80's" in a pejorative way. What on earth does that mean? it sounds like the 80's, when we know that technology controls much of the sound of any specific time. So maybe the technology has not changed that much but the actual songs, arrangements etc. are not really representative of that period.

2. What on earth does it sounds old mean? First of all Ferry has always been somewhat of a sentimental ( fool )nostalgic songwriter. If you don't like this kind of mood or sentiment why, oh why do you listen to any of Ferry's music???. As far as the performances and the actual songwriting goes, it all sounds vital and timeless. When you reach perfection there is no place else to go!!.

3. My god! the man is almost 60. How many near 60 year old men could come up with something this cool. Ferry sounds dated? He sounds hipper than any of the current 20-30 year olds on the current scene.

4. I think People are missing the point of the title Frantic. Of course we don't expect 58 year old Bryan Ferry to make Frantic music. But just because his public persona is that of a carefree, cucumber cool man of the world he still lives like the rest of us in the postmodern age of anxiety. He may be frantic in his real life, he may act the way he does and produce the kind of music he does in order to TRANSCEND a frantic inner life instead of acting it out like a punk rocker might.

Songs:
1. Ferry has always seemed to me to be a combination of Elvis Physical/Sensual Genius and Bob Dylans Spirtual/Intelectual Genius. Perfect Example here. This is quite simply a great version of a great song. Dated? Old? HUH?
2. Great use of The word Buffalo
3. Freddy King and Jeff Beck have also covered this song.
4. The chorus almost hits Duran Durans Hungry like the Wolf but shifts before it could be plaigarism.
5. Another great performance of a great song. Love that Harmonica
6. One of my favorite songs, vintage Ferry sentiment and alot of fun as well.
7. Perfect intro to Fool For Love
8. Another fantastic pop song and the Harmonica/Guitar intrumental passage is simply exquisite.
9. My least favorite thing here but fine in context.
10. Another perfect pop song. Arty and accesible. Great piano melody on chorus.
11. Reminds me of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" from the For you Pleasure album. Like Cocteaus dream world of Beauty and The Beast.
12. Great Pop song. Love the line "Well thats mighty rough"
13. Great Lyrics and Great Eno. Every time the harmonica is played on this CD I get chills down my spine.

THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM AND A TIMELESS ONE. BEST ALBUM OF THE YEAR EASILY.

Frantic is hardly an appropriate title choice for Bryan Ferry, who is the epitome of unflustered, cucumber-cool decorum. Frantic, his first album to feature original material since Mamouna, has been simmering away on the back burner for all of eight years. And it's all the tastier for it. The ingredients are just right: another song cowritten with former Roxy Music partner Brian Eno; tunes about models, movies, amour, and large houses; a guest appearance from Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood on "Hiroshima" (this is Ferry reclaiming his stolen clothes from the New Romantics' wardrobe); four fine new numbers co-penned in the 1990s with the Eurythmics' Dave Stewart; contributions from guitarists of the caliber of Chris Spedding and Mick Green; backing vocalists of the caliber of Lucy Laplansky and Alison Goldfrapp; a little bit of medieval; a little bit of Leadbelly; and a little bit of Dylan. Often the involvement of so many contributors results in too many cooks spoiling the broth, but not here. Compliments to the chef. This being a Bryan Ferry album, you can still play it at dinner parties, but the sensual ardor put into Frantic suggests Ferry had blood, sweat, and tears trickling down his tuxedo. This is a fantastic album. --Kevin Maidment
