Music reviews of You Forgot It in People

Music Review: This album keeps growing on me
Rating: 4 Stars

I reviewed this album earlier, and gave it 4 stars. At the time there were only a handful of songs I really liked, while the others remained in obscurity. Since then almost every song on the album has continued to grow in my interest, until I now consider this one of my favorite albums. I have also since purchased their debute album, which is far less inspired and a lot more repetitive and raw. This is one of the most professional albums I've ever heard, even though this band is an experimental sound. In review:

1. Capture the Flag: 7.5/10, This is just a little ditty as an intro to the CD. It's not a full song and isn't incredible, but it does a nice job of setting up a soothing melody with a slight edge, as most of the album resembles.
2. KC Accidental: 6/10: Oy, this one just didn't work, the only bad song on the album. I immediately compared this to Radiohead, but not one of Radiohead's better songs, more like something found off the highly experimental Kid A album. This song just doesn't grow on me.
3. Stars and Sons: 9/10, One of my immediate favorites. I saw videos for this and Cause=Time and fell instantly in love with both songs. While I found it repetitive at first, I then really got into the drum beat variations, and increased my admiration.
4. Almost Crimes (Radio Kills Remix): 8.5/10, While this song still has its weak points, this is the ultimate "it grew on me" song from this album. I hated this song at first, used to skip over it, then I kept listening to the end of the song when the voices drop out and it just turns into drums and guitar. Awesome, just awesome.
5. Looks Just Like the Sun: 8.5/10, What a peaceful dreamer of a song. Some people accuse this of being lazy and sleepy, but I like the sleepy quality, it's perfect for a summer day, as much of this album is.
6. Pacific Theme: 9.5/10, I admit I'm a huge fan of a good drum beat, and this song has the 2nd best drum beats on the album next to Cause=Time. The guitar just screams Pacific beaches, the beats vary and flow with ease, and it's yet another song that just continues to earn my admiration more and more.
7. Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl: 7.5/10, This song has reversed a little in my interests. It became an immediate favorite on my first few listens, then began to get dull in its slightly deranged qualities. The tweakings for the voices and the very repetitive lyrics and chords just began to wear on me. Still a nice song, just not as nice.
8. Cause=Time: 12/10, Yes I know I'm rating on a scale of 10, I don't care. This song is far and away one of the best rock songs I have ever heard in my life! I don't exagerate, I loved this song the minute I saw the video on MTV2, and I've been hooked since. It was the main reason I bought this album, and I took a risk seeing as I knew nothing else about the band. The entire thing is like a spring building and waiting for release, then exploding at 2 points in the song with passion. God I love it.
9. Late Nineties Bedroom Rock for the Missionaries: 8/10, An interesting follow-up to Cause=Time, not sure I'd have put it in that order, but most of the CD is mixed up like this. Soothing and dreamy, and I love the way it merges with the next song, very well done.
10. Shampoo Suicide: 8/10, I like this a little less than the previous song, but because the 2 inter-twine so well, I gave it the same rating. The ending can get a little bit painful on the ears, so I wouldn't recommend turning it up too loud, but the beginning is great.
11. Lover's Spit: 9/10, This is a much acclaimed song from this album, with good reason. It sounds like it should have been a radio hit, but never was picked up. It makes me think of other bands, such as Radiohead again among others, and it's almost like this song is a salute to indy rock in its chords and flow.
12. I'm Still your Fag: 9/10, Another song that has become more of a favorite through time. At first it seemed dull and ordinary, now I consider it a gem, the ultimate relaxation song, even the subtle noises in the background like the buzzing makes me think of lying outdoors in the grass. Hot lazy summer day song.
13. Pitter Patter Goes My Heart: 8/10, This has basically the same tune as Anthems for a 17 Year Old Girl, but with a more professional sound and no lyrics. I found this a good way to close the album, it feels right.

From this album I have discovered a new favorite band in Broken Social Scene, despite their less catchy debut album. Most debut albums are like that anyway, and I'm waiting eagerly for their follow-up to this one, I have high expectations and rightly so. Also, their lead drummer (they actually have several drummers, there are over a dozen people in this band) has become one of my favorites of any genre, and I'm a drum freak. Buy this album.
PS: Did I mention the drummer for this band is one of the best I've ever heard? As a drummer myself, I take notes off some of his background riffs, especially in Pacific Theme and Cause=Time, both times nearer the end of the songs.

Description of You Forgot It in People

Broken Social Scene materialized in 1999 when K.C. Accidental's Kevin Drew & Brendan Canning, formerly of By Divine Right, bonded their friendship into a band. During the next few years, Broken Social Scene created an atmospheric rock sound. Feel Good Lost marked their debut album in 2001 & introduced a revolving cast of Canadian indie musicians. Drew's fellow mate from Do Make Say Think was added to the band, as well as Evan Cranley (Stars), James Shaw, & Emily Haines (Metric). You Forgot It in People showcased Broken Social Scene's expansive musical design in October 2002. Digipak. Copy Controlled. Arts & Crafts.
