Music reviews of Circus

Music Review: The ringleader in charge!
Rating: 5 Stars

Circus can be considered to be Spears' best work yet in par with In the Zone, which incorporated variety in the sound it had, along with this sensuality that no other artist or album has been able to reach as of now. Circus ranges from intrepid heavy beat dance tracks (Womanizer, Kill the Lights, the title track-Circus, Mannequin) to the mellow ballads everyone probably missed from Britney (Out from Under and My Baby), to cool-laid back tracks (Unusual You, Lace & Leather and Blur, which to a certain extent can be considered to be hypnotic). The first single and opening track lead the way to the rampant show to come in the upcoming 12 tracks that complement the rest of the record.

"Womanizer", was probably a bit hard to get used to as it reminded me much of what Blackout sounded like, though it turned out to be a real great pop song which granted her her second #1 hit in the U.S. after `Baby One More time' back in 1998. The beats are infectious and to me, they remind me of an alarm for some reason, warning everyone of a womanizer out for the kill. It is a fun track, its sassy, it is so catchy, and the hook and the chorus will be stuck in one's head for days. Even though it's repetitive, it doesn't get old.

"Circus", the title track, highlights how Britney sees her life in the public eye, comparing it to a circus with "All eyes on me, at the center of a ring just like a Circus", reflecting how her life has been portrayed and followed through tabloids and other media means, how it is all entertaining to all of those watching when she "puts on a show" but there's more to it lying behind. Personal favorite right here, it can easily be the best song Spears has come up with and put out there, the beats are so innovative, contagious and have this dark circus, mysterious sorta deal along with heavy strumming and pure pop elements to it that makes it spooky, it almost makes it R&B.

"Out from Under", has this haunting, evocative tone to it, its almost teary, the message carried through the song reflects all she's been through in her emotional life, its about taking a positive outlook, seeing a way out of all she's had to put up with in a difficult relationship. Even though it's a cover, it does showcase what Spears wants to convey and she definitely takes it to another level and gives the song a whole different meaning. This tracks gives us a vulnerable side of Britney, unlike "Why should I be Sad?" off of Blackout did where she blames a lover, but instead in this song she uncovers herself and shows how she really feels and doesn't protect herself by blaming the other counterpart.

"Kill the Lights", the classic Britney Spears song addressed to no other but the paparazzi ("Is that money in your pocket? Or are you happy to see me?") at the same time coalesced with this playful/flirty yet sarcastic line of "Don't be scared, make a move, see me now"; this track considerably incorporates the same themes that brought "My Prerogative", "Gimme more" and "Piece of Me" to life. The song even sounds angry at a point and shouts out to the paps and in all honesty tells how she really feels of being followed and taken pictures at all times, threatening with "you wouldn't like me when I'm angry" and claiming "all the flashing, trying to cash in, hurts my eyes".

"Shattered Glass", takes me to her Oops!...I did it Again album. The track is so innovative, the intro before the beat kicks in is just soo cool, and the breathy synthesized notes she sings at the beginning are so dang sexy it makes the song addictive. In this song she sounds at her best, she sounds fierce and when she sings the word "glass" she does it in such a way that can make any man melt, I know she melts me. The song itself sounds as if it were a reproach to a man and it surely is, but if reprimands were all like this, I wish I wouldn't be in my best behavior to have them at all times!

"If U Seek Amy", Hidden message of nothing but truth lying beneath a fierce beat and a seductive set of rushed la la la la's. Just the fact of it being so cleverly titled makes this song amazing, aside from the storyline it follows of looking for an alleged `Amy' yet displaying the views she holds of herself. This track speaks nothing but the truth, no matter what goes on, Britney will always be at the top of her game, regardless if its some crazy rumor, an album out, she will always succeed at it, just look how Blackout was released at her worse and still was well received and has even been labeled as the best album in her career for crossing over to a new sound and taking pop to a different level. Love her, hate her, she'll always be the amazing entertainer she is, and, well, we all must admit, we all want to "seek Amy" with her.

"Unusual You", its another highlight of the album, its such a good track which has a dreamy feel to it, with a mellow piano accompanied with this electro-pop-dance vibe; it is quite hard to describe. Even though the track isn't exactly a ballad it does sound like one. It is a catchy mid-tempo, hard to skip song which not only brings back the good ol' Britney we're all used to but we see her letting down her guard, "Boxer in the ring trying to protect myself", and embracing love, letting it in.

"Blur", picks up where "Early Mornin'" left off in In the Zone, with this hypnotic beat along with an undertone of regret. This song is almost like a drug, and has this hazy, distorted `echo-ey' mood; it draws me in and makes me feel as if I were in my sheets. At first, it wasn't a favorite but after a few spins it surely is an awesome track, which also features sexy breathy vocals from Spears.

"Mmm Papi", reminds me of the sound Duffy's "Mercy" has, those hyped 70's. The song makes me picture a group of people in the 70's with those old striped high waist swimsuits blasting it off at a pool party, doing the distinctive dance moves from the time. The song allows Britney to have fun, and it's a moment in the record to just get up and dance to it by not really following any structure exactly but just playing around with oneself and enjoying the music behind it. The track takes me back to the times when I used to play previous Spears tracks such as "Soda Pop", "(You Drive Me) Crazy" off her debut, "Anticipating" off Britney, and "The Hook Up" off In the Zone. The track is all a pop song should be, its light, playful, positive, its fun, dancey and dang catchy.

"Mannequin", is all Blackout should have been, it just sums up what the label and Britney wanted to have out with her previous album, fun, heavy-dance influence and nothing more than an experimental sound with dance breaks. This track is fantastic, it makes me want to move and dance away along to it. The lyrics also tinge a Britney classic, "You can cry your eyes out of your head, my face like a mannequin", and it's a nod to her 2000 hit, "Oops!...I did it Again" when she mischievously sings "My face like a mannequin, yea I did, it again and again".

"Lace & Leather", reminds me a lot of the sound of ...Baby One More Time, only better. The bass guitar line in the introductory part just makes you wonder what's in store, and the beats behind also give this spooky feel just like "Circus" does. She demands attention and proves she's the ringleader in charge of this "circus" when she sultrily sings, "Baby take a seat, eyes on me, this is my show". This song without a doubt "makes a boy want to bite his lip".

"My Baby", addressed to her sons, it's a lovely ballad that makes you sing along to it, with a haunting prolonged note at the end that reminds us Britney Spears is here to stay and that she still can sing.

"Radar" was an odd addition but it is certainly a highlite off Blackout, and even though it doesn't fit that much with the sound of Circus, its worth having it here because the song didn't get promoted in the last album and it is a deserving track, it has an amazing production and the theme is quite cool; the beats are electrifying.

The difference between Circus and Spears' previous effort (aside from the tawdry cover given to Blackout) is Circus is more cohesive, it has more seriousness to it and shows Britney going back to form, while Blackout was a pretty dang hot mess, which was more output from the producers than from Spears herself. Circus is damn hot, but unquestionably not a mess. Blackout indeed had an impact in the world of music, which then proves Spears position and power in the music industry and the pop genre, of now mostly everyone channeling the direction she went with her album, just consider Kat DeLuna's "Unstoppable", Christina Aguilera's "Keeps Getting Better", Lindsay Lohan's buzz single "Bossy". But Circus is more than that, it goes beyond, because not only it re-arranges the electro-sound of Blackout, but makes pop bound to other genres.

Circus shows Britney more involved in the process, more into her own songs and decided to take her position in the music industry back. It is as if she had a wake-up call and now is riding the right way, headed for not only success but also personal well-being. Circus brings Spears back from the shadow Blackout and its tacky cover gave her along with the poor live performance at the 07 VMA's, it is seeing Britney stepping into the spotlight again with great quality music and better than ever with not only a toned body but having it all together. The record is pure fire and brings Britney in full force, the tracks are fierce, the beats are dance-ready and this truly defines Spears as a living legend, who has left and still leaves a mark in pop, not only for reinventing her genre but for making it out of rough times and still having the talent to make great music. This is a must buy, its great to listen and dance to, its catchy, its fun, its sexy, its all a Britney Spears cd should be, it incorporates regular elements of pop combined with the experimental sound she brought us to with Blackout, which makes it even better, because regardless of the controversy surrounding the album and the cheap, distasteful cover, it was an awesome album too, it is no Blackout Pt. 2 or anything like it, but its Blackout taken from the underground, more mainstream, more pop, with the Britney Spears twist. Circus is such an amazing record, when I play the cd in the car, even my parents rock to it (my dad knows some of the lyrics), hey, it's that good!

Squint at the cover of Circus and it's easy to mistake Britney Spears for the flow-haired Jessica Simpson--an indication that the bold come-ons of 2007's Blackout, a commercial success but a critical letdown, may have given way to something softer and prettier. Don?t be fooled. Circus differs from Blackout in a number of ways, the most important being that 1) it keeps its ringmasters--i.e., its producers--in check instead of allowing them to run an overly sleek show, and 2) Brit brings it vocally here in a way she hasn?t since 2003?s In the Zone (check "Kill the Lights," on which she channels her mentor Madonna and the liquid-y "Blur"). Beyond that, Circus is, as its title promises, a Blackout-like spectacle. Which is not to say the songs being made under this particular big top aren't top quality. Those who pine for the pre-trainwreck Britney will warm to the suggestive but not outright slutty "Mmm Papi," and anyone who can't get enough of the embattled publicity magnet will eat up "Womanizer" and the title track. Spears--let's be honest--lacks acrobatic grace, at least under tabloid scrutiny. What's great about Circus is it proves she's still willing to jump through hoops to make likable, stylish music. --Tammy La Gorce
