Music Reviews of Britney

Music Review: Britney Spears...Wow, Very Different! 4.7 Stars
Rating: 4 Stars

I'm A Slave 4 U is the first track, probably one of the most intruiging pieces of ear candy of the year, with no chorus, truly, and a very different approach to her music. It's fresh and new, written by the Neptunes, and guess what? Britney does all the vocals!

Overprotected is track two, and Dark Child gets to remix this for Britney as single #3...sounds like Crazy all over again, if you ask me, not that that is a bad thing. Dark Child is making sure Brit's hip hop community love isn't a fluke. The song is great, another Max Martin-Rami pop masterpiece.

Lonely is track three and all I can say is "WOW." Britney's doing a rock esque piece, and she adds in that Dark Child, again, flavor to it. Britney helped write this, and two up and coming song writers, Josh and Brian...ummm, they've done stuff with Aaron Carter as well as Brit, and that means they can do good or bad songs *ahem* But this would top the charts as a single. Buy it for this if nothing else.

Next comes our girl-woman song that goes deeply into the manners and ups and downs of womanhood and it's transitions. NOT. Britney isn't too deep, but she can still manage to make another Max Martin song good.

Can you say Neptunes? Boys is a Slave esque track that's nothing more than a hip hop dance track...wait, slow down, did I say a hip hop dance track? There's something new.

Here comes the Kylie. Get ready to face the music. It's Anticipating. Britney tries to imitate the sucess of Kylie Minogue on a track she helped write, Anticipating. I think I've said enough.

I Love Rock N Roll, the Joan Jett cover as featured in Britney Spears' first major motion picture release coming February 15th from Paramount and MTV Pictures. Yeah. That's about it.

Cinderella, a Max Martin song...good tune...decent lyrics...Britney helped write this, one of the best songs on the album...Pretty good! It's not very deep though, like most of Brit's songs aren't.

Get ready to explode when Bombastic Love's corny lyrics and Nelly Furtado (guess what) esque vocals (at least at the start of verse 2...) come at you! It could have been SUCH A GREAT SONG with the melody, but the lyrics aren't so hot! Bombastic Love, to put it bluntly is: A Good Song Gone Bad.

That's Where You Take Me...Aaah...La la la, another Kylie approach. However, she comes nowhere near the Can't Get You Out Of My Head greatness, or, that's one way to put it, right...anyway, this is probably one of the weakest tracks on the album, coming in with mixed reviews.

What It's Like To Be Me: Oh, not Justin! The pop-doers come at Britney with a song with a pathetic climax, good lyrics, and *guess what* a POP MELODY! (No, not NSYNC's "Pop" melody, sorry ladies...)

Guess I'll review the import tracks:

Before The Goodbye: Well, let's think for a minute. This is the BT track cut from the US album. Why? This is such a strong, hot dance track. Take out Anticipating, put in this.

I Run Away: A beautiful, beautiful ballad with pretty good vocals, excellent lyrics that fit the melody, written by two star song writers! Take out That's Where You Take Me, put in this.

When I Found You: Fair vocals, pretty good lyrics, what flavor bubblegum do you want? Don't change a thing on the album with this song.

There's my review of Britney Spears' new hit smash album arriving November 6 with the super smashes SLAVE 4 U which only made it to #27 on the charts and I'M NOT A GIRL which never charted THANK YOU FOR READING! I'm out!

Music Review: Britney on 'Britney'
Rating: 3 Stars

She is living the American dream. Born in Hicksville, Britney Spears became a member of the Mickey Mouse club, had a skyrocketing pop career and is in love with one of the most eligible bachelors in the world - of course she is the center of hatred.

However, is that to say that Britney is an overshadowed talent? Yes and no.

"Britney" opens with her most recent smash "I'm A Slave 4 U," which is the catchiest the diva-in-training has ever been. However, the mastermind behind the throw-down beats of the sexy track is none other than the Neptunes, who are responsible for artist Kelis' impressive debut effort. Merging Britney's rather ailing vocal range with R&B pop songs is, surprisingly, not a failure.

The Neptunes also produce another standout track on the album - "Boys." This song has a convertible-cruisy feel. Of course the lyrics are a nursery rhyme gone wrong, yet the urban beats make it deliciously edible, if not the highlight.

Then you get to the part were Britney attempts to replicate other artist's songs. "Anticipating" sounds like a drunken-karaoke version of Janet Jackson's overplayed "All For You."

Later on, Britney steals a rap bass line for "Bombastic Love." But the complete disgust comes when she covers Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' "I Love Rock 'n' Roll." The result is a sorry attempt at credibility. You need true attitude to carry that tune. She should've learned that from her last album when she turned the Rolling Stones' racy "Satisfaction" into pure and utter sleaze. Don't mess with the classics, lil' Brit.

Spears, who proudly boasts about her partial writing credits on this release, sings about the tumultuous life of being a poor little 19-year-old billionaire.

"Overprotected" is her way of stealing the car when her parents aren't around and "Lonely" is her plea on being a hormonal teenager - not exactly Alanis when it comes to penning numbers. Still, the sound is danceable.

All this comes to an end when Britney leaves the schmaltzy pop tunes that she does best and meanders into gross ballads to show that although shallow, she is deep.

"I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman," the next single, works better than putting your finger down your throat. Britney is the queen of sap. Her crooning is even worse than on "Lucky" and "Sometimes" combined.

I do not expect her to burst into something as consequential as Joni Mitchell's "Big Yellow Taxi," but with all the green she makes selling pre-schoolers T-shirts and posters, she could've at least paid for an actual lyricist's assistance. But that does not seem to be her priority.

"Britney" is saved when she returns to upbeat with the skip-hop of "That's Where You Take Me" and the staccato "What It's Like To Be Me," a song co-written with her boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

There is an extra serving of R&B on this one, without the soul. The good thing about Britney is that although she sticks to the most generic pop templates, she can bust a move that will give a rather average dance song a facelift.

This album is like other Britney albums - it has infectious dance uppers and dreadful downers. She is not a good vocalist or a gifted songwriter. Her talent is in her dancing, which is why most her songs make sense only after you see the video clip.

You might not want to listen to "Britney" after a long hard day at work, but fortunately you can always dance to it.

Music Review: Major, major improvement
Rating: 5 Stars

Britney has come a long way in the past four years. In this album, Britney portrays a "No forgiveness" type of girl. It's great, I can't stop listening to her songs!!! The style of songs in this album in my opinion is much better than the other two, although "Oops!...I Did It Again" had some good songs, most of them appeared to be fillers to me.

I'm A Slave 4 U - 8/10 It's not that great when you first listen to it, but it really grows on you. It just makes you want to dance, with it's funky beats and sexy lyrics. The video is a little too nasty though.
Overprotected - 9/10 This song never get's old. The chorus is great, along with the third "verse". The instrumental version of this is great too, although I must say, the Dark Child remix is MUCH BETTER. That song is one of her best ever
Lonely - 10/10 This song is great, the guitar really helps out. The chorus is a great yell out type of thing, while the verses are cool with their quiet whispery qualities. It couldn't be improved any bit at all.
I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman - 7/10 She has had better ballads, with better lyrics, while this isn't bad, it's not great either.
Boys - 8/10 It's a good song, but yet again, not great. It's really funky, but the music is repetitive until the last parts of the song. The Co-Ed Remix is MUCH better and get's a 10/10
Anticipating - 8/10 This song made me cringe at first, but it really grows on you. The music is too happy at first, but it get's much better later on. the lyrics kinda er....suck.
I Love Rock 'N' Roll - 6/10 I don't really like this song much, I loved it at first though. It gets kinda stale, just like all the covers Britney did...but it's the best cover so far.
Cinderella - 7/10 It's not that great, the music is really good, but I don't know...the style is.....I don't know. It's not bad, don't get me wrong, I just don't like it much
Let Me Be - 9/10 It's not good when you first listen to it, but it grows on you big time. The unique instruments in the background are really fitting for the song, and it creates a peaceful melodic work of art.
Bombastic Love - 10/10 This song is genius, I love it. It is so new and different. The opening is just plain amazing, I have no idea what synth effect that is, but it is amazing. The first line is so magical too "I, I'm here to testify". Amazing.
That's Where You Take Me - 7/10 It's not that great... I mean I'm sure a lot of people like it, I just happen not to
What It's Like To Be Me - 1000000/10 This song is simply amazing, I love it, it's always on. I can't stop listening to it, I just wish they would have made it longer, say 3:30...it's way to short, comming in at 2:50
When I Found You - 9/10 Very different indeed. I like it a lot, it's a good sort of ballad. It's actually kind of addicting...
Before The Goodbye - 10/10 An AMAZING song. It's undescribable.

Songs not featured on "Britney", yet often credited to it

I Run Away - 10/10 Amazing ballad, with great synth affects, and an occasional violen! It's a great song, if only it was on a CD...
Intimidated - 9/10 Great techno-ish song. Also, I wish it was on a CD
She'll Never Be Me - 15/10 GREAT SONG! I can't WAIT for the full version! Great download song, you'll be addicted to all 1:13 of it....

But Britney! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT!

Music Review: a musical growth for britney.
Rating: 4 Stars

In spite of common opinion (often stated by people who have founded theirs on a handful of overplayed Britney radio singles and negative media coverage), Britney is actually very _underrated_. Her showy sexuality and "bubblegum-pop" roots tend to deceive and make many people shove her off as a two-hit wonder, or a pretty face (and figure) with no talent.
Actually, listening closely to her songs, you'll realize that Britney has a GOOD voice --- unique and expressive, not simply sweet-thin like most girl groups tend to favor these days.
And she can dance, extremely well. Dance _is_ a form of talent. okay?
In this light, Britney is a true artist, and deserves to get the respect an artist should receive.
This CD is, both imagewise and musically, a big step up from her former "baby one more time" and "oops! i did it again" material. It experiments with more musical styles, genres, producers, and Britney collaborates more.
1. I'm A Slave 4 U
---If you don't like it at first, it'll grow on ya. One of the best club songs of the year, more of a hip-hop and rnb feel than anything Brit has done before. She shows a sexier side of her voice and pulls this song off well. Makes you wanna get up and dance.
2. Overprotected
Another Max Martin song, returning to her pop roots, only not so bubblegum. Pretty good song.
3. Lonely
Probably the "hardest" pop song on here, almost rock. A solid song with a few secs of Brit-'rap' in the middle.
4. I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman
Not too gooey a ballad, co-written by Dido. If you like ballads, you'll like this one, and if you don't, you probably won't. Brit's singing is good on the ears, you'll never get the 'screeching' that sometimes annoys on other artists' vocally-oriented tracks.
5. Boys
Like Slave 4 U, another Neptunes-produced, clubbish song, but sultrier. A funky beat, edgier than most Britney music, also good for getting you into dance-mode.
6. Anticipating
Very poppy, sort of 80's music thing. Hit or miss; you either love it or hate it. Brit's voice very sweetish-light on this one.
7. I Love Rock 'n' Roll
A cover of the Joan Jett song. Pretty good as a song in itself but when you listen to the original version you might like the feel of it better, as this version of ILRNR is more 'modernized'. Britney sings it all right, though.
8. Cinderella
Max Martin. Pop song. note: All the pop on this album (except 'anticipating') is grittier than the pop she did before.
9. Let Me Be
the beginning is almost like an acoustic track and you can hear her singing more clearly in this song than most. Here Brit's voice takes on a low, dry feel.
10. Bombastic Love
Another Max Martin pop song; some people love it and some people hate it. Interesting arrangement.
11. That's Where You Take Me
Light song; if you like pop and you're on the romantic side, you'll enjoy this one. Luvvy lyrics and easy listening, with Brit's voice sweeter and gentler than usual.
12. What It's Like To Be Me
One of the best songs on the album. Co-written by Justin Timberlake and with some of his vocals in the background. Good beat and Britney does well on the vocals.

Music Review: Shows some growth
Rating: 4 Stars

I would say that this CD truimps Oops...I Did It Again in terms of lyrics (a little more mature), song variety, and vocal clarity. Her style is slightly different; she still has her Max Martin songs, but she also has some more mature songs that older fans (around her age) can relate to. Her sound is still pop, but this album is sprinkled with R&B and rock. I usually listen to this CD all the way through. However, I think she sang better on the other CDs, in terms of her voice having more substance, style and variety in sound. At first I thought her vocals were better here than on the previous albums because they were clearer. However, though her vocals were clearer here, they also were a little more bland/generic sounding sometimes than on her past 2 albums.

This CD is all upbeat songs with 1 or 2 slow songs. I like to listen to most of the songs each time I listen to the album.

1. I'm A Slave 4 U--Great start! This first single is much different from anything that Britney previously recorded. It is produced by The Neptunes, and it is a club-banger. Lots of people who do not like Britney even like the song. 4/5

2. Overprotected--Cool beat. This is not the version that she released as a single in the U.S; it has a different beat. 4/5

3. Lonely--She is practically talking instead of singing on this song, but it works. She even sorta has a rap part that is cool. She co-wrote this. This is one of the songs that I instantly liked. 5/5

4. I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman--The only "real" ballad on the album. It is also the theme song of her movie "Crossroads." This is definitely one of her best songs. She has very good vocals on this track. This is my favorite song on the album. 5/5

5. Boys--Another track produced by the Neptunes. At first I didn't care for it too much, but it grew on me. It sort of has an old school hip-hop/R&B beat. 3/5

6. Anticipating--co-written by Britney. This song is about her going out clubbing and having fun with her friends; it has a cool disco-like beat. 4/5

7. I Love Rock N Roll--A remake of Joan Jett's song. I don't know what the original sounds like, but I like this song. 4/5

8. Cinderella--This is one of my favorites. Sounds like it has a Euro-dance beat. 5/5

9.Let Me Be--co-written by Britney. This song was on the "On The Line" soundtrack. Brit says that an argument with Justin inspired this song; it is about her telling him to trust her because she knows what she is doing. 5/5

10. Bombastic Love--I like this song, but she sort of sounds a little bit like a kid on it. I heard she didn't even want it on the album, but her record label liked it. 4/5

11.That's Where You Take Me--Co-written by Britney. I consider this song a slow song because of the way she sings it, but the beat behind it gets a little fast on the choruses. It is a sweet song that sounds like it was written for Justin. It is one of my favorites. 5/5

12. What It's Like To Be Me--written by Justin and Wade(her choreographer). Has a different sound; it stands out from the others. Justin does background vocals and a beat box. Sounds good! 5/5
