Music reviews of BritneyMusic Review: Oops... She Hit Us Again Rating: 2 Stars
Here’s my breakdown (track by track) of the songs on Britney: 1. I’m A Slave For You My Score: 1/5 First Thought: This is a Britney song? The Good: It’s a new sound for Britney with some ‘edgy’ lyrics. The Bad: I cannot stand this song. It’s one of those songs by Britney that gives me a pounding headache. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I’m left in agony from all this torture. 2. Overprotected My Score: 3/5 First Thought: Another ‘Stronger’ (aka your typical empowered Britney song.) The Good: Now, this is freaky. I can actually relate to some of the lyrics in this song. Right when I think that I have come to the conclusion that all Britney songs are pathetic, elementary school-ish poems written by money-hungry adults who have no clue what they’re talking about, I come across a song that I can actually kind of relate to. Open mouth, insert foot. The Bad: Well, if you ignore the lyrics to this song, it’s really bad. Britney’s delivery is, as always, too perky for me to believe that she has any clue what she’s singing. The song itself is just your usual, below-average pop song. The only reason it got an ok rating from me was that the lyrics surprised me. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I forget that I liked that lyrics and just revel in the awfulness of the song. 3. Lonely My Score: 3/5 First Thought: Sounds like a remix of a song by Dream. The Good: It’s catchy and makes me feel like jumping around with my dog. (I have issues…) The Bad: I can’t say the lyrics this time since I can’t understand most of them. Basically, the problem with this song is that it’s so formulaic and boring. There are a million and two songs just like it. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I begin to like it and find myself singing the tune outloud. Like I said, it’s really catchy. 4. I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman My Score: 5/5 First Thought: Sounds good. I think I’ll like this one. The Good: This is my favorite song on the CD. It’s slow, but sweet without being overly sappy. Britney almost shows some emotions in it. Plus, the lyrics aren’t that horrible. The Bad: There is just a touch of sappiness to it. Otherwise, it’s a pretty decent song, as far as Britney ballads go. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I start to drown in the sappiness and have to put on some Fiona Apple songs for a bit. 5. Boys My Score: 1/5 First Thought: Reminds me of an early Madonna song. The Good: Britney shows signs of maturity. Gone are the ‘baby baby’ lyrics. Now, there are lyrics involving the word ‘sexy.’ The Bad: The whole song. I really didn’t like this one. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I couldn’t bring myself to listen to it more than once. It was that bad. 6. Anticipating My Score: 2/5 First Thought: Sounds like a bad song from the 70s. The Good: This is definitely a different sound for Britney. The Bad: Everything else. The lyrics, the tune, the vocals that sound like they’re by Mandy Moore. Ugh… After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: It actually started to grow on me. Scary… 7. I Love Rock And Roll My Score: 3/5 First Thought: No one should remake a Joan Jett song, especially Britney Spears. The Good: She remains faithful to the original version while adding some more modern, Britney-ish sounds. The Bad: If she had to go and remake a Joan Jett song, it should have been ‘Bad Reputation.’ That would suit the Britney image better and would be like giving her critics- including me- the middle finger. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: It really grew on me. I even started to almost question which version was better- the original or this one. Now, that’s scary… 8. Cinderella My Score: 4/5 First Thought: It sounds like she’s been taking lessons from Jessica Simpson on how to be the next Britney Spears. The Good: This is my second favorite song on the CD. It’s really catchy and a good pop song. The Bad: The lyrics are cheesy- though that really is a given since this is a Britney Spears song. Also, it really does sound like a Jessica Simpson song. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I start to get annoyed with it. I think it’s best to only listen to this one once or twice an hour or its charms start to weaken. 9. Let Me Be My Score: 2/5 First Thought: Sounds like a song that Jennifer Lopez would sing. The Good: It’s catchy and has a good beat. The lyrics aren’t that bad. The Bad: It’s too generic and screams ‘filler track.’ After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: The refrain got stuck in my head. Also, I start to think that the song is actually a religious chant to make people want to buy Britney Spears’ products. 10. Bombastic Love My Score: 2/5 First Thought: Weird. Very weird. This cannot be a Britney Spears song. The Good: It sounds very different from anything I would expect from her. I thought her voice sounded cool in it. The Bad: Besides the cheesy lyrics, it was too dramatic. It made me think that she was attempting an opera-like sound for it. And, if she was trying for an opera-ish sound, she came up a little short. The song just doesn’t flow very well. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I like it less and less. I thought it was ok the first time I heard it, but after a second time, I couldn’t bring myself to listen to it again. 11. That’s Where You Take Me My Score: 3/5 First Thought: Sounds like your typical Britney ballad. The Good: The refrain. It’s so sweet and cutesy, I can’t help liking it- I am a girl after all. The Bad: Pretty much everything else. The lyrics are Britney at her corniest. The back-up vocals sound like they were done by Britney’s kid sister. Hmm… maybe they were. After all, I’ve heard that Britney’s sister is a performer… After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: The cheesiness of the lyrics really starts to show, but the sweetness of the tune grows on me. It takes me back to the songs I liked in pre-school. 12. What It’s Like To Be Me My Score: 2/5 First Thought: Oh, God. Britney is not attempting R&B, is she???? The Good: It’s a new sound for Britney. She actually isn’t that bad at R&B. This song could’ve been much worse. The Bad: Need I say the lyrics? Also, it felt out of place with the rest of the CD. After Hearing It Several Times In A Row: I go from hating it to having neutral feelings. I realize it’s not my kind of song, but some people might actually like it. (...)
