Music Review: Eno's Experimental Pop / Art-Rock Album.....

Largely considered to be one of the most talented (& Prolific) composers/producers of the last 20 years. Brian Eno has helped shape the musical landspace not only through his incredible
production skills for the likes of: Roxy Music, David Bowie, Harold Budd...etc, but his solo work, in particular his pearless "Ambient" albums & here....his Art-Rock, Experimental-pop albums, that were so far removed as anything else back when this was first released in 1977.
"No One Receiving" is the sort of catchy Art-Rock/ White funk that "Talking Heads" would work similar magic on some 10 years later. Energetic, bouncy guitar leading angular rhythms, that both musically and lyrically are probably more in debt to Avant-Garde than to conventional Pop music, abstract and fractured bass and tight funky guitar, mix wonderfully with skewed keyboards, with Eno's Vocals echoed & slightly distorted, that makes this track arguably one of the most innovative tracks on the album.
"Backwater" without doubt is my favourite track, think a song based on a nautical theme, with warping horns, and insistent delay bass that is so simple in it construction, that its instantly memorable (in the same way "The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army" is a catchy simple bass). With lyrical wordplay that seems to focus on being stranded, with Eno's singing "Black water, There were six of us but now we are five.....We're all talking To keep the conversation alive", it's experimental-pop, like nothing else out there, Intelligent, funny, a fantastic sense of offbeat rhythm, and more incredible that this was made in the late-70's.
"Kurt's rejoinder" is a seductively melodic piece of work, again staying in the field of insular theatrical mood swinging rhythms, yet still remaining accessible enough for general public consumption, and despite Eno's penchant for electronic instrumentation, & eclecticism, across a range of disparate styles , it all connects brilliantly. And even though I'm still not sure what the lyrics are referring to: "Celebrate the loss of one and all, all, all And separate the torso from the spine Burger Bender bouncing like a ball, ball, ball So Burger Bender bargain blender shine". (I have a feeling that it may refer to some poetic writing), it sits perfectly with the music.
"Energy Fools the Magician" is one of a couple of instrumentals that make up the 10 tracks album. And with Eno's being no stranger to instrumental music, you'd expect him to delivery the goods, and the moody late night 'Film noir' styled piece that invokes memory's of classic late-night black-and-white thrillers. Although it is at odds with the pulsating, driving previous tracks. Auch, is it's mood and composition & elegance, that irrespective of it's complete change of pace, it remains sublimely crafted soundtrack music.
"King's Lead Hat"...moves back into the experimental side of things with the Prog-rock/Art-Rock, that ups the tempo considerably and has an almost 'Punk' energy to it....brash & Confident, and a concise & tempered Rock-out moment on the album....such is Eno's mastery of structure, It remains Literate and Eno's urgent post -post punk style vocals yelling : "King's lead hat put the innocence inside her, it will come, it will come, it will surely come", turning the song into a soaring, anthemic chorus, as vibrant and ear-catching as anything else on the album.
Rounding out the rest of the album is a collection of subtle, immaculately composed pop/instrumental songs. For instance the gorgeous mood-evoking instrumental serenity of "By the River", or the detached pastoral emotional intensity of "Spider And I", that recalls some of the fine elegant moments of his "Another Green World Album", insofar as they both contain an amalgamation of truly beautiful music
For anyone that is a Eno fan (casual or otherwise), this is an absolutely essential purchase, This was the period around the mid-70's - early 80's when he was at his creative peak, making albums across genres, that would (in a lot of cases) go on to denfie them. This would be his Experimental Pop / Art-Rock album, and although he wouldn't revisit this album, and produce similarly styled albums, this is without question, one of the finest Eno albums in his prolific career. Absolutely essential....!!!
