Music Review: Brent sets the bar high for tropical beach party music

The easy, sunny, fun, and demeaor of tropical and coastal life is entertainingly presented in Brent Burns' work, both with this recording and his live performances. Brent, as any artist in any medium, awakens images in and stimulates those who partake of his art. The portait he paints in ten songs is fun and captivating enough to inspire the listener to dream of being "Too Lazy to Work" and of life in a "Little Grass Hut" "Down In Paradise." Those who already know about his world are equally taken on a dream trip back there to share in the fun: quite an accomplishment for a song writer. Buffett may have been the first and only huge non-reggae tropical artist, but there are many, many solo artists, like Brent (and many excellent bands) who playing and write tropical-rock/beach/island music. We certainly would not review each Rock or Jazz artist by mention of or comparison to one single artist of that genre and no other. Writers and performers like Brent are the front-line musical heroes of every U. S. beach community, where they play hundreds of live dates each year, write super-fun and entertaining music, and hundreds of thousands of us enjoy them live in the music's actual environs: a really cool tropical grill or bar somewhere. Give me that over a huge Buffett arena concert any day. The writing on this recording is tops in the beach music market. I will shortly have margaritaed and daiquried this CD and dropped it on boat bottoms and beaches so much that I will look forward to buying another one. You all should have at least one. Brent combines the feeling of tropical breezes with a touch of country. The songs tell his life as a Gulf Coast trobadour (Livin' the Life", "Neon Tan"). He sings of love lost and found ("911","Compass & Anchor","Little Grass Hut") and the trials and tribulations of living in a resort community ("If It's Snowbird Season Why Can't We Shoot'Em?").Whether you're willfully stranded at a vacation resort or soaking up some rays on a nearby beach, the music of Brent Burns is the perfect soundtrack to the laid-back lifestyle. The obvious identification with Jimmy Buffett and his beach-bum sound is in evidence throughout this collection of absurdly comical and witty pop vignettes. The buoyant tracks instantly carry the listener to a sultry paradise as Burns sings lines such as "don't tell me how you do it up north, because I don't care." While the music tends to rely too heavily on trite keyboard sounds, few will notice as they join in on the unabashed good times. Margaritas and drink umbrellas not included. --Lucas Hilbert
