Music Review: "NOW DIG THIS"

Well I am going to try this again, I was on my last paragraph ...and the power flickered sending my words into that never never land known as Computer Hell, here goes.....
I bought this CD about six weeks ago, on arrival, I listened to it and thought "Well it's Boz Scaggs, of course it's good, but after I was finished I felt a little flat. The album was ok, but I wanted it to be "great", afterall it was Boz Scaggs, one of my favorites. Had I written this review then, I would have said unkind things about guitarist Danny Korchmer's work being lackluster and ho-hum sounding. I would have commented on the lack of "pizzazz" from a production standpoint and probably given it three stars, saying things like I had hoped for more from Boz.
But then I played it again and found one song that I liked, and with each subsequent play I heard others that I really liked. The next thing I knew I was rapt in this album. I realized, the "pizzazz" is in the laid back tastefulness of this work. Like saying "The Silence is Deafening". There is an intensity to this, like adding a compressor to a lead guitar track, you get strength without volume,a powerful non-dominating sound, more noticeable by it's absence.
The songs are very well written and arranged and each one has it's own unique persona. Korchmer's guitar work teases you with it's being just right, but leaving you wanting a little bit more.
A frustrating thing about this album... it was released in 2001, making me wonder, why am I just now hearing it? I have come to the realization that the Atlanta area marketplace is terrible. The radio stations are letting the listeners and potential buyers down. With formats covering "Oldies, Classic Rock, Alternative Rock, New Wave, Country, Country Rock, Rap, Soul, Gospel and Contemporary Christian", you may notice the absence of "Classical, Jazz, Big Band" and a format that would cover new releases by old Rockers. The current Adult Rock stations are so busy playing the old songs they don't make room for any thing new. Combine the poor quality radio with the fact that there are no decent record stores anymore and you see that the music business is in trouble. How do you market a new band or CD.
I'm afraid that the same thing that happened to broadcast television is happening to the music business. When cable and sattelite were just a rumor, instead of fighting for viewers by airing better programs, broadcast TV went down the tubes without a fight, forcing the viewers to look elsewhere and pay for it.
AM/FM radio is doing the same, driving the audience to XM/SIRRIUS to listen to any thing new.
This album is an example of the pending demise of the music industry, it took me 8 years to hear these songs, if we don't figure out a way to fix this problem it will kill the record business.

Co-produced by Boz Scaggs, David Paich (Member of Toto and collaborator on Silk Degrees) and Danny Kortchmar (guitarist for Don Henley and James Taylor)Dig, originally released in 2001 on Virgin Records, is now available on Gray Cat Records. The critically-acclaimed album features contributions by Roy Hargrove (D'Angelo) on trumpet, Ray Parker Jr. and Steve Lukather on guitars, Nathan East on bass and Greg Phillinganes on keyboards.
Dig, in sum, is an album that both reaches back to the essential elements of Boz Scaggs' artistry as it points the way to a fresh installment in a lifetime dedicated to music. The result is ten original tracks that together comprise the artist's most assured and accessible collection since his 1976 landmark Silk Degrees.
He didn't go so far as to call it Silk Degrees II, but Dig is as close as Boz Scaggs is likely to come to recording the sequel to his most commercially successful and, for many, best-loved record (unless you count 1977's underrated follow-up, Down Two Then Left). Reunited after all these years with Silk Degrees collaborator David Paich, Scaggs makes a successful return to the blue-eyed soul of his late-'70s works on tracks such as "Desire" and "Thanks to You," the latter featuring tastefully muted trumpet work from Roy Hargrove. Elsewhere, a tuneful "Call That Love" bounces along over a "Lowrider"-style groove, while "Get on the Natch" and "You're Not" are apparent attempts by Scaggs and Danny Kortchmar (who coproduced with Paich) to fuse blues and hip-hop. There's even something for fans of Paich's old band, Toto, whose pristine pop stylings circa "Africa" are echoed on "Vanishing Point," arguably one of this album's best cuts. True, nothing here may be quite as poppy as "Georgia" or as pretty as "Harbor Lights," but Scaggs deserves credit for trying to evoke the spirit of Silk Degrees without merely pandering to his past. --Bill Forman
