Music reviews of Ordinary Alien

Music Review: A great dance album!
Rating: 4 Stars

I can't say just how thrilled I am to get another BG record after so many years.
My heart definitely skipped a beat when I held it in my hands the night I received it.
I felt just like a child on Christmas morning! Any true fan knows what it feels like. And it feels SO good...

I actually own the Brazilian edition, which has 13 songs, so this is the cd I'll be commenting on.

1)TURN 2 DUST (5.43) I still think the original version, produced by Kevan Frost, is the best. It's slower and you get to appreciate the song more. I admit that after hearing the original version, I ended up finding Kinky's remix (which saw the light of day years before the original) only reasonable. The new mix is somewhere in-between. It isn't as good as the original (I doubt any remix could be), but it's actually quite good and catchy. The song sounds very modern now. Well done, Kinky. You surpassed your own work.

2)YES WE CAN (6.30) Obama's election and inauguration happened over one year ago. People in America, particularly the gay community, are growing disappointed at him. I like him, but being the opposition is always easier than being the situation! Anyway, I think Kinky could have edited Obama's speech out. It makes the song sound a bit dated. To be honest, I never liked the speech anyway, especially because the song has more to do with G's personal problems than with Obama's election.

When OA is released in the USA, I feel it'd be a good business move (and there's NOTHING wrong with it!) to delete Obama's speech. It may upset G's Republican fans (and YES, he does have them) and may make his now not so happy Democrat fans feel he's trying to cash in.

YWC holds a special place in my heart because it was the song that made me look at G with fondness again. The lyrics ''forgive these crimes against myself and I'll forgive your lack of faith'' were a punch in my face. It was as if they'd been written for me. That verse made me travel back in time and recapture the feeling I had whenever I heard a CC/ BG track. That said, I'm thrilled that G talks exclusively about his music and projects in his interviews now. Positivity generates positivity!

3)BRAND NEW (5.32) When I first heard BN a couple of years ago, I found it really bland. Listening to it now on the record, it does shine. It's no surprise that O GLOBO (Rio de Janeiro's main newspaper) named it one of the stand out tracks of the album (alongside TURNT TO DUST and YES WE CAN). So true. Maybe I ''understand'' it better now in the context of the album, who knows? This is the exact version that leaked to the fans last a couple of years ago.

4)AMAZING GRACE (5.02) Not the original or the single version. Something in-between, just like T2D. Quite good too.

5)DON'T WANNA SEE MYSELF (5.45) I've always loved this song. SO CATCHY!!! It's the same version we've heard on line. And his voice sounds lovely in this. Is it true that it's a song from 1985 (someone told me this)???

6)IF I WERE YOU (5.43) Although included on CC's 4-cd boxset, it's nice to have this one here. It fits the atmosphere of the cd quite well. And it's a killer track. Just like AFTER DARK (which I love), I'm glad it's part of the collection.

7)GO YOUR OWN WAY (5.43) This is totally different from the reggae version that we all have listened to before. Kinky's turned it into a BRILLIANT dancefloor anthem. It sounds like a totally different song. It can bring the house down anywhere in the world!

8)TIME MACHINE (6.37) Turning ballads into dance tracks (and vice versa) is always risky. Sometimes it works well. Frente suceeded when they adapted New Order's ''bizzare love triangle'' and created a fantastic acoustic ballad. Sometimes it doesn't. To me this is one good example. All the dance remixes I've heard of this song don't do the track justice. After all, the original is so brilliant! Think of an orange. Kinky's no different. This remix is very much like getting an orange, squeezing the juice out of it and giving the peel to someone. Sorry, Kinky...

9) HERE COMES THE GIRLS (5.44) I was very sad to learn that this was going to be included. I've never liked any of the four The Twin singles. To me, they're the worst songs on YUM YUM. I love the album, but always skip these four. I know that HCTG in many ways sums up the The Twin concept, but I can't stand it. Sorry, George...

This version is slightly different from the album version, but I can't tell you how different it it... I skip it! ;-)

10) SECONDS (6.23) It's very catchy. Not my favourite on the record, but nothing to skip either.

11) AFTER DARK (6.16) I ADORE this song. It's one of my favourites from YY. If had been released as a single and G had been given half the exposure that other mainstream artist get, this would have been number one for centuries. It's incredibly catchy and it's a brilliant dance track, which can appeal to different audiences and music fans.

That said, since this is the exact YY version, I wish they'd included something different, like NOTHING (equally great), that was never included in any BG record.
However I can't say that I'm sad that this is here... I LOVE it SO MUCH!

12) KILL THE A&R (5.46) It's nice to have a previously unavailable track on the record. I don't know if you are familiar with Belgium group VIVE LA FÊTE, but this sounds SO MUCH like them. That's precisely the sound they make.
It's nice. Pretty different from the rest of the cd.

13) LOOK PON U (4.19) I'm embarrassed to say this, but I despise the Jamaican woman's patois. SO ANNOYING. The song is very catchy, but her talking... Awful. Let's hope the next hurricane in Jamaica grabs her and throws her into the ocean, filled with sharks. This is the version we all know. I wish G had included RAGGA MUSIC, which I like even better.

Extras in Brazil: PSYCHOLOGY OF THE DREAMER - the single version is amazing and this version manages the impossible: it's even better! It's the version that appeared on line a few years ago. I'd trade LOOP PON U for this anytime!!

HUMAN RACING - a different version, but nothing to shout about. Ok, I'm biased. I always skip The Twin singles!

SANITISED - I haven't heard it, but you already know it: I always...

Overall, a KILLER album and a must for any fan and anyone who enjoys dance music.

I'm only going to give it 4 stars because TM, LPU and HCTG spoil the record for me a bit.

Maybe we'll get ORDINARY ALIEN PART II?
Here's hoping.

Well done, George!
