Music reviews of Box Car Racer

Music Review: too good to be just a side project
Rating: 5 Stars

this album surpasses the level that Tom's main band Blink 182 ever reached. it seems that they felt able to make a different type of music that blink could never make a whole album of in fear of losing their fans.

1 - I Feel So - A lively and energetic song, very radio-friendly, the instrumentals at the beginning of the song are fantastic, and the record is full of anger. 9/10

2 - All Systems Go - Back to basics for this one - wouldn't surprise me if it was a dropped record from an earlier Blink album and doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the album. 7/10

3 - Watch The World - definately one of my favourite records off the album, a slower song with thoughtful lyrics. 10/10

4 - Tiny Voices - A louder record where Tom's vocals are pushed to its' limits. The energy of the track is at full tempo and again there is a lot of anger inside the song. 9/10

5 - Cat Like Thief - This is one of the records where Boxcar really do something different. Two vocalists, Tom Delongue and Tim Armstrong with differing voices sing about a girl and another man. The song is perfectly suited for both singers and has become another of my favourites. 10/10

6 - And I - Again the tempo changes from the previous song, another energetic one - this one very sweet, Tom's vocal deliery is superb. 9.5/10

7- Letters To God - The first 2 1/2 minutes sounds like a ballad, with only the guitar quietly strumming alongside Tom's melodic vocals, and then suddenly the song explodes into life. Don't listen to this with the headphones up full volume - you'll get a shock. Excellent song. 9.5/10

8 - My First Punk Song - Credit to them trying to do something different and orignal, but this really does not fit in with any of the album and is in fact a complete mess. 3/10

9 - Sorrow - On first listen is nothing special and sounds like your typical whiney song from Tom, but it grows and grows and you really begin to feel the pain expressed in the vocals - even if the chorus is a bit simple. 9/10

10 - There Is - This was the first song i heard from Boxcar Racer, and is why I bought the album. Amongst the best on the album, a simple but emotional song which is hard not to love. 10/10

11 - The End With You - Again, this is another grower, not immediately a standout track but after a few listens you really begin to appreciate the lyrics, and Tom is on-point yet again. 9.5/10

12 - Elevator - Tom teams up with Blink co-singer Mark Hoppus for this song. Effectively a new Blink 182 song with a couple of extra musicians - however this doesnt sound like the typical Blink track at all. A slow-paced song, it does get rather repetitive towards the end, but it is a beautifully constructed song about Tom commiting suicide from the top of a building, and Mark watching from the bottom. 10/10

13 - Instrumental - does exactly what it says on the tin. The instrumental starts quietly before exploding into life, then goes back to quiet, then loud, then quiet etc. Sums up the changing tempo of the whole album, but some vocals would have been nice. 7/10

Description of Box Car Racer

Playing punk pop for teenagers hooked on MTV may inflate your bank account, but it doesn't do much for your credibility. Fortunately, Blink-182 guitarist Tom DeLonge and drummer Travis Barker, two-thirds of the multiplatinum crew, found a way around this quandary. The pair formed Box Car Racer and recorded this album, which strips back the gloss and brings on the noise. Referencing explosive hardcore groups like Fugazi and Refused, who encase their euphoric melodies with barbwire riffs and earsplitting rhythms, may sound like an ominous route. But while Box Car Racer songs like "Maybe I Don't" and "I Feel So" take on weightier subject matter than Blink-182's typical slapstick fare, it's ultimately not that big of a departure. The record was produced by Jerry Finn, who helmed Blink-182's last three albums, and features singer-bassist Mark Hoppus as a guest vocalist. --Aidin Vaziri
