Music reviews of TroubleMusic Review: McKee Does an Amazing Job, Far Better Than Pop Stars! Rating: 5 Stars
I probably would have never discovered Bonnie McKee's music if PBteen didn't feature her in their catalog! I'm so thankful, because her music is so good! She has such talent (she wrote the lyrics and songs all by herself) and has a beautiful voice that stands out against the manufactured pop stars. It's too bad that she doesn't get a lot of publicity, because her she deserves the attention. I hope she will someday come out with another cd, because she should last as an artist, I mean, you can't even consider the pop/rap stars as "artists" because they aren't. Anyway, here is my review for each song:
01.TROUBLE:10/10-This song has awesome spunky lyrics, and I love the percussion in this piece. A very "spicy" song, and her voice sounds amazing! I love the music, especially the guitar in the first verse.
02.WHEN IT ALL COMES DOWN:9/10-One of my favorites on the cd, (well, they are all really good!) this song is about a heartbreak, but she sings about holding on "when it all comes down" (!). A very positive song, and she has lots of vocal range on the cd!
03.OPEN YOUR EYES:8/10-I like this song, her voice is really amazing!! I love the rain sound in the beginning and the beautiful intro. The one thing I don't like is how the chorus doesn't get much louder (powerful, musically) compared to the versus.
04.SOMEBODY:100/10-This song is definitely my favorite!!! "Somebody" is about a devastating breakup but McKee sings that there will always be somebody for her, even if it may take a while to find him. She sings amazing! The piano is so beautiful, and the choir is so powerful! Pure, rich talent in this song!
05.A VOICE THAT CARRIES:10/10-This song is very powerful and somewhat bluesy. The intro has a nice guitar piece, and I like the frog sound! This song is fun, loud, and about McKee's voice that will "carry" her to L.A., away from a boring place. Bonnie speaks her mind in this song! Its about following your dreams.
06.HONEY:81/2/10-"Honey" is a very jazzy song, and Bonnie sounds really good in this song. It has a very powerful chorus, but the reason I gave it an 8 1/2 is because it isn't one of my favorite favorites, but is still a really nice song. The lyrics is a little too old for her, though.
07.GREEN GRASS:10/10-This song is one of my favorites! Its very bluesy, and Bonnie's voice has a tendency to wail around, but I like that sound. McKee speaks her mind in this song. Very creative.
08.JANUARY:9/10-McKee sings about loving a man who's much older than her. It's a great song (McKee sings great, of course, and the tune is really cool), but a little akward. The song has great percussion and a spunky, loud chorus. "January's just around the corner!"....
09.MARBLE STEPS:10/10-"Marble Steps" is a beautiful ballad, and Bonnie's voice is amazing! In between you can hear the gentle sound of the piano, and the harmonizing is really nice. (Bonnie does beautiful harmonizing on every song!) I still don't quite understand what the lyrics mean. (I just got the CD!)
10.SENSITIVE SUBJECT MATTER:10/10-I love this song! It's one of my top 4. I love how Bonnie stretches "I" almost every time she says it! The chorus is really nice and the lyrics are beautiful, "I still need time to mend my broken seams..." In a way, whatever instrument it is, the backround instrument [in the chorus] sounds a little like the Mulan song "Reflection". The lyrics and voices are different, but that one instrument part in the chorus and you'll notice. A very beautiful song, her voice is amazing once again.
11.I HOLD HER:10/10-Bonnie McKee does such an amazing job in this soft slow song. The lyrics are amazing (even though I'm still trying to figure them out) and her voice sounds sort of imperfect, which is actually beautiful. I like how her voice shifts from full to quiet when it gets higher. Also, her harmonizing is really quiet, but beautiful. The guitars and gentle instruments are very beautiful, and this song is truely a masterpiece. I just wish the song was longer, because it is so nice!
12.CONFESSIONS OF A TEENAGE GIRL:10/10-"Confessions of a Teenage Girl" is such a fun song! It sounds sort of Spanish-y with the percussion in the backround. It's a very positive song that is fun to sing along with! This song is perfect for Bonnie McKee to sing.
Overall, this CD is very inspirational and fun to listen to. Bonnie McKee has such a powerful, swayey voice, but not like Christina Aguilera's overpowered-overextreme voice that barely calms down. Bonnie manages her voice greatly, the way it gets louder and quieter and you can't you notice the change. She is a very creative writer, more lyricly talented than Avril Lavigne! I hope she continues her success and will be noticed by more people. I'm going to tell all of my friends about her. She deserves a lot more attention for her creativity. Gosh, she's so talented, she should be nominated for a GRAMMY! I mean, all of those crappy, don't-deserve-it "artists" shouldn't be up there. Bonnie did an amazing job and I hope she continues this career. BUY THIS CD!

Description of Trouble"I want everyone in the world to know who I am," says audacious Seattle-bred 19-year-old singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee. "I want to move people. I want to open people up - and I want to last." With her debut album Trouble, produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette) and Bob Power - and its powerful anthem "Somebody" - McKee's bold pop-from-the-heart promises she will be not just a somebody but a major artist who indeed lasts. Although only nineteen years old, this precocious redhead unleashes more sass and ambiguity in her voice than a woman twice her age. Fierce and musically assured, Bonnie McKee is a pop alternative to Avril Lavigne, traversing some of the same lyrical territory as the Canadian punk thrush but with more emotional intelligence and grit--quite an accomplishment since McKee didn't employ the glossy talents of the Matrix, or anyone else for that matter--the singer penned all twelve tracks herself. With a vocal range on par with Christina Aguilera, McKee manages to go from kittenish to feral in the space of a single song, and always seems to end up on top, no matter how many times she stumbles. "When It All Comes Down" may be the sound of heartbreak, but McKee refuses to wallow in her pain and plots her own eventual recovery in the space of a single song. By rights, this should be the anthem for anyone attempting to get over a breakup--without appearing to. "Confessions of a Teenage Girl," is so winsome and engaging, it could inspire a Fox TV show. But Bonnie McKee has talent to burn, so it wouldn't be a surprise if that's already in the works. Paired with Green Day producer, Rob Cavallo, McKee elevates post-teen rebellion and broken romance to high art--and this is only the beginning of what she's capable of. --Jaan Uhelszki
