Music reviews of The Circle

Music Review: No Masterpieces on Here But a Better Album than We've Heard for a While!
Rating: 3 Stars

The Circle is by no means anywhere in the league that the masterpiece 80s and first half of the 90s albums were. It is the best album Bon Jovi have brought out since the only good for a frisbee album crush started the run of very, very average albums. There's no big hits on here, there's nothing that'll even probably be played in years to come on the radio, the only song that may make the concert playlist is the first We Weren't Born to Follow which seems to be what it was written for. By the way if you have never been to a Bon Jovi concert, definitely do so, a better live act you won't come across. The rest on this album are pretty much just fillers but they are mostly quite pleasant to listen to fillers background music pretty much. Lyric wise a lot are questionable, the time taken to write those lyrics seems rushed, music wise, there's nothing special in any of them and a few sample riffs from old big hits, others just seem like remakes of what they've done before.

When Were Beautiful - sound like it should be on a soundtrack playing in the background of a scene with a big open sky or something. It's all right but nothing to recommend the album.

Work for the Working Man - Samples the intro guitar riff from Livin' on a Prayer and plays it over and again throughout the song rather than coming up with something original. I like that riff, but if I want to hear it I'll put on Slippery When Wet. It's not bad for a filler song on this album but it's obviously has no potential to be a single. A thing about Bon Jovi's great albums was every song had the potential to be a smash hit. As far as songs representing the working class man though, there's a lot better out there. The lyrics aren't really clear on what this song is supposed to be telling us either. Is the working man in trouble? Is he prosperous? "Whose going to work the working man, hurt for the working man?" Did the working man just win lotto? Become a rock star? Who knows. Guess it's hard to write a song about the working man when you've had millions of dollars and women throwing themselves at you your whole adult life, however they did do it well in the past, Dry County for example.

Superman Tonight - Sounds like the soundtrack songs that used to play during low budget 80s TV shows like The Henderson Kids. Lyrics ask whose going to save you from a bunch of scenarios and the character singing wishes he could be your superman tonight? Why can't he? Unless he's dead or a ghost or something, I don't see the problem.

Bullet - Sounds a bit like Hey God from These Days lyrics and intro musically wise. It even mentions God in the same context "God are you listening". Run out of ideas fellas? With lyrics like "What is the distance between a bullet and a gun?" it's no wonder their stealing from past work. I mean what is that, couldn't find a tape measure? Why would you need to know this anyway. Won't it change when either of these items is picked up?

Thorn in My Side - Lyrics to a very basic guitar riff. Bon Jovi sings a song to a thorn, yes a thorn, that is embedded in his side. He basically tells the thorn his life story (well not his own, but the character he is portraying). Apparently there is some danger that this thorn will take his pride, is stopping him from running, and pestering him in other ways. Just pull it out Jon! Get some tweezers if you can't get a grip with your hands. Singing to it is not going to solve anything!

Live Before You Die - When this first started playing I thought it was just a remake of the song These Days. It's not, it's basically a bunch of different people throughout his life that tell him you've got live before you die. Would have thought that was pretty obvious, but maybe not! And what's this there's one thing he never forgets "when you're young you always think, the sun is going to shine". Wtf is this? Is this an environmental message that pollution will block out the sun in the years ahead? Who knows!

Brokenpromiseland - A song with a basic guitar riff rotated over and over again. Bon Jovi tells us to imagine a vision of angels falling out of the sky. I think there's some sort of war waging on between good and evil. Either that or God has broken his promise to the worshipers and the character singing is breaking out of the church/cult or whatever. Lyric wise it is refreshing to see something completely new but musically it is another filler. Surprisingly Desmond Child co-wrote this one.

Loves the Only Rule - Computer game sounding background sounds with a guitar playing. Basically this upbeat song is telling the listener the only rule is love. Everything else you've heard is wrong and you should do what do most would just call you crazy for doing Eg "Fly like an aeroplane, dance in the pouring rain, spit in the eye of a hurricane", the advice is limited to what rhymes with these lines. Probably one the best of these songs on The Circle.

Fast Cars - This must be some game Bon Jovi, Richie, Tico or David plays with their kids that somehow got recorded as a song. In it Bon Jovi pretends they (him and whoever he's singing to) are fast cars and role plays through the lyrics. If you're under ten, you'll love it! Maybe if you've also got kids you'll enjoy playing it and singing along with them. If not you'll probably just press skip.

Happy Now- Asks what you would say to him if he told you he had a dream. Then tells you he wants to start a fight and throw rocks and starts demanding that you don't try to drag him down. Is he drunk or insane, either way you're leaving the house for while and maybe returning with the cops.

Learn to Love - Lots of piano action in this one. Sings in a slurred drunken manner (probably the same character from the song before after a few more drinks) that you've got to learn to love the world you're in . Then recounts some suicidal experience where he held a gun in his hands. If you didn't change the locks after the last song you will after this.

There's no songs on The Circle that will be requested on the radio in decades or even years to come. Nothing but We Weren't Born to Follow are likely to make the playlists in future concert years, fans won't be holding out to hear any of these. saying all that though, most are quite good as background music even if the lyrics are a bit average. An album of what would be fillers on early career albums are actually quite listenable to. Well except for Fast Cars, unless your ten!
