Music reviews of Crush

Music Review: Just.... older
Rating: 4 Stars

Ok.. so they changed their sound and their style in the 90's.. big deal.. it was only VITAL to their survival... so they released a contemporary monster with KEEP THE FAITH, a darker, dismal THESE DAYS which was smeared by the morons and welcomed by those of us who can accept change. And now, after five LONG years, Bon Jovi has produced their seventh non-comp studio record... and it speaks overwhelmingly positive volumes about their ability to last in an unforgiving market.

I admit, I was skeptical at first when I heard that the boys were at it again.. after all, I didn't like THESE DAYS when I first listened to it.. but it grew on me.. alot... Jon's DESTINATION ANYWHERE was decent, but there was just something about not having Richie on the same record that took some of the depth away from the Jovi-ness... so when I bought CRUSH for no reason other than I was confident that I could count on Jon and company for some quality modern rock, I still had a pessimistic vibe in the back of my head that maybe after five years, some of the magic was gone...

But then I listened to the album, and those bad vibes went bye bye. This record is amazing! "It's My Life" flaunts a very nice and refreshing guitar melody which speaks just as much as the lyrucs, which Jon obviously didn't put too much effort into... but hey that's okay, this song, in lack of a better word, "rocks"... no problems here... "Say It Isn't So" frightened me just by title, as I had a preconception of a sap-fest laced with every single mush-mush cliche ever known.... again, I was more than happy to find myself wrong once more, listening to an edgy, mid-tempo rhythm typical Jonbon quality lyrics... "Thank You For Loving Me" floats on a simple but stunning piano, courtesy David Bryan, and some really mature and touching words which Jon sings in a very fine vocal. Look for this song to be the exit anthem for alot of weddings over the next year or so. "Two Story Town" is lyrcally reminiscent of Jon's solo song, "Destination Anywhere", but this time around there is a non-typical Bon Jovi groove - non-typical in that it simply sounds like nothing they have ever given us before. "Nex 100 Years" is no worse than an average filler song - nothing special about it, but no reason in the world to say that it isn't good. "Just Older" stands as my favorite song on this record for a couple reasons. First of all, it has a terrific beat to it - a tempo which alternates between fast and slow vocals and instruments, while always maintaining a very melodic new-era Jovi sound, something which I hope becomes the standard of things to come from this band. As good as this song sounds, the words are what really caught me. I am of the opinion that although Jon doesn't actually state it specifically in the song, this track is about the band itself. 'Hey man it's been a while do you remember me? / when I hit these streets I was seventeen / a little wild a little green / been up and down and in between / after all these years and miles of memories / I'm still chasin' dreams'.... yeah, that's definately about the band, which is great, because they are NOT OLD, they ARE just OLDER... a great song. "Mystery Train" is ballad-esque, another one of my favorites overall on this record. Again, it wins such popularity with me simply because of it's melody. Alot of people criticize Jon about his lyrics.. well, start LISTENING to the song as a whole, and you will - if you have any ear for great rock music - understand why "Mystery Train" deserves its props. "Save the World" doesn't do much for me, I am sure the guys had some B's laying around that could have replaced this. What is lost in audible pleasure here is gained in "Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen From Mars". Please, don't let the title fool you. This song is very fun, very hip, very fresh. The words tell the story of a couple of strangers who meet at a masquerade, so I am assuming that when Jon put the lyrics to this one that he was either writing about his personal experiences or he was just really drunk. After this very cool number, comes probably the worst song on the album, "She's a Mystery". It doesn't sound THAT bad, but I know Jon can write love ballads that would put this fill-track to its comparitive death. Forgetting about this one, we move to "I Got The Gil", which starts off as average, and then kicks into a fun and toe tapping chorus. I can easily picture the guys singing this one with a smile on their faces. The album closes with another hip song, a feel-good party rocker entitled "One Wild Night". Anyone who can shed themselves of unjustified negative Jovi-naysaying should be able to join the rest of us in getting down to this song.

CRUSH is very strong, very deep, and at the best of times, very very fun. It is evident that with this release, the guys have found themselves in possession of the secret to musical longevity, and that is both great and deserving to one of the few 80's hair metal trendy bands who grew up and dodged the grunge bullet in the early nineties, only to come back stronger and more powerful artistically then they were in their popular hey day. So buy this record, and enjoy the ride. I would give this album five stars, but there were just a couple problems. First of all, to a lesser extent, the sleeve of the CD is absent of the lyrics which are always a bonus. And to a larger extent, Richie was not in this album nearly enough. Save the last minute and a half of "Next 100 Years", his solos were never longer than a couple seconds, and consequently, were not a fraction as deep as in previous efforts. None the less, a solid effort by the team, and the tour will be, if history means anything, nothing short of spectacular.

Description of Crush

Japanese edition of Bon Jovi's long awaited new album. Featuring two bonus tracks 'I Could Make A Living Out Of Lovin'You' and 'Neurotica' plus the first single 'It's My Life'. The domestic release isn't scheduled until June 13th. 2000 release. Standard j
The growling, choppy guitar sample that opens the first track here, "It's My Life," is a virtual declaration of intent for the first Bon Jovi album in five years, a statement that they're updating the sound without abandoning the traditional virtues that made them one of the biggest bands on the planet. So make way for a hi-tech parade of smooth-but-gutsy rock anthems, almost any one of which will gladden the heart of every AOR radio programmer in the land. Unless the world has changed irredeemably, cuts like the midpaced heartbreak chugger "Say It Isn't So" are destined to become Bon Jovi standards, while an outbreak of scarf-waving and lighter-flicking is certain to accompany any live performance of the big weepie, "Thank You For Loving Me." Arguably, everything on Crush is done by the numbers, but with consummate pros like Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora at the helm, these are the kind of numbers you have to take seriously, because by the second time they kick into the chorus of any song it's damn near impossible not to sing along. --Johnny Black
