Music reviews of 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be WrongMusic Review: Final "shut-up" for sceptics and non-believers and a great BJ- testimonial Rating: 5 Stars
So, basically this Box-set is a final "shut-up" to every shallow narrow-minded person who used to be grumpy about Bon Jovi as a band, and of course, what's most important: their music. Jon's a little thinned hair, Richie's divorce, the departure of bassist Alec John Such and some major flops like the recent "Have a nice day" aren't enough to write off this legendary band; and with this 4-CD-box they will rock the hell out of you, I tell you.
This Box spans and encapsulates pretty well everything what the Bon Jovi phenommenon is about. We get 4 hours of delighful music from very different peroids of their career with many particularly important gems; among them the very early-"7800Fahrenheit" outtake which owed much to bands like Dokken (1985), incredible material from sick-in-terms-of-great-stuff "Keep the faith"-sessions (1992), the best of B-sides and some great soundtrack-music like "Good guys don't always wear white". It's definately the best band's music you can hear since a long long time, and undoubtedly their best LP in at least 10 years.
Some of the die-hard-fans (like me) already lost the faith in these guys after terribly mediocre "Have a nice day" which is currently at stake. But - as we all know - every band has got it's ups and downs. And I'm not going to drone on whether the present band cannot write good songs anymore; nevertheless they put out arguably their best LP ever (with all of the songs written long time ago) along with the newest, most horrible and least accomplished one. Coincidence? I hope not.
But back to the buisness... this CD finally and definitively shuts mouth to all the critiques of this band. Firstly, Jon's singing is as good as it has always been, only he does things which he probably wouldn't venture on "normal" records. Among these experiments is the fabulous "Temptation"; I honestly don't know to what should I compare this one, perhaps I'm too young to have something on my mind. Nevertheless, this is a very solid and ambitious effort, to my mind - somewhat reminescent of the 60's or 70's - with absolutely perfect, cool pacing; once you've heard it you will listen to it many times in a row, I guarantee. Definitively one of the most important highlights on the entire Box set. I'm also keen on Jon's voice experiments like on "Last chance train", where he sounds like he's just undergoing voice's breaking. On rest of the songs - obviously - he keeps up the standard of good old "anthem" and sing-along-choruses as well.
"Out of bounds" and "Flesh and bones" is a Richie Sambora statement that proves how ferociously gifted - and underrated - guitarist he has always been. "Sympathy" is another one. The riffs are very good, skillfull, catchy, passionate. A great testimonial for Mr. Sambora himself is beyond doubt "If I can't have your love" where he sings on his own and proves once agian (after solo-debut "Stranger in this town") that many times he does vocal parts even better than Jon. All in all, every band member gives a taste of his vocal abilities here - both the drummer and the keyboardist have their shots here. Well-worth attention is the new - far superior to the original - version of "Always"; it seems much more mature and not teenage-aimed-only. "Nobody's hero" is a beautiful, slow acoustic ballad with beautiful paino-play by the keyboardist David Bryan and scarcely any guitar or drums; and it's the piano and non-chliched, mature lyrics that make the songs so perfect. Definitely another big highlight on this Box-CD. I could go on for some time like that...
The Box set a a whole also shows how the band matured in terms of lyrics. From wild and overly-sexual "We rule the night" to also sexual - but how much mature and elaborate (!!) - "The fire inside". The aforementioned is yet another major gem here; slow, puerly acoustic with great elaborate lyrics perhaps should have made its way on the "Keep the faith" album to balance the power-ballads like "Bed of roses". And for those who would like the hear the old good Bon Jovi, there's a "Billy", there's a "Edge of a broken heart", there's a "Sympathy"... I can come up with only a few songs that are not top-notch here and somewhat don't suit here. These would be
"Real life", "Thief of hearts" or "Kidnap an angel" which are
somewhat cheesy and reminescent of the worse part of Bon Jovi's career and the later peroid of songwriting. One major blunder occured also: why the hell one of the greatest band's efforts, "Let's make it baby", didn't make out neither the "New Jersey" LP nor the BOX-set?!!? Had the few abovementioned not-so-good songs been replaced by some fan-chosen ones (I strongly opt for "Let's make it baby"), this would have been clearly not only the best Bon Jovi album ever, but one of the best in rock-muisc history.
To collate the facts, this is a great testimonial of ONE of the greatest (not the best!) rock-bands of all time. I honestly cannot come up with a better compilation availible on the market. Bruce Springsteen's last one was OK... bur not much more than that, whereas this here truly kicks your butt !! Perhaps only Metallica's "Garage Inc." can stand up with this one in terms of accomplishment and coherence. The selection of the songs is almost perfect (with few flaws that don't matter among 50 tracks). Absolutely all of these - but a few - are great and incredibly well-crafted; overall it's a very ambitious, acomplished piece of musicanship that is diverse, sometimes experimental, non-cliched yet not at all lacking this peculiar, melodic BJ-flow that we all love.
Definitely some of the songs wouldn't have had even a slight chance of appearing on other group albums; so here we have them all neatly packaged, to listen, explore and discover Bon Jovi we didn't even know existed. This is a delight for all the fans;
of course, all open-minded passionates of music will be very contented with this one as well as it truly contains a very solid, melodic rock-stuff. And, besides, If I dare, I might recommend this one to all sceptics out there that do not believe in BJ as a band. Here it proves once and for all it is a lot more than pop-rock or "It's my life".

Description of 100,000,000 Bon Jovi Fans Can't Be WrongBON JOVI 100.000.000 FANS CAN T BE WORNG (4CD+DVD Playing off of Elvis Presley?s 1959 album 50 Million Elvis Presley Fans Can?t Be Wrong, right down to the gold-lame suits the quartet dons on the cover, stalwart rockers Bon Jovi make a strong case that they?re one of the true populist bands of their era with a box set that serves up dozens of previously unheard and seldom heard offerings. Designed as a heaping 20-year anniversary feast for insatiable fans, the four-disc/bonus DVD collection is surprisingly vital and consistent, considering that just about everything included was initially either rejected or related to B-sides and soundtracks. The high quality of these castoffs is attributable to the band?s habit of preparing dozens of tracks for each album and cutting loose strong compositions that didn?t fit with the theme of the completed product. Thus, some stylistic stretches were left in the vaults (check out the Southside Johnny-style r&b of "Love Ain?t Nothing But a Four Letter Word"). Bon Jovi fans will find be delighted by this collection, and even skeptics may find themselves reconsidering these Jersey survivors. --Steven Stolder
