Music Reviews of For Emma, Forever AgoMusic Review: I'm playing this CD until it wears out. Then I'm buying another. Rating: 5 Stars
OK, so I'm eighteen months late buying and reviewing the CD, but here goes.
The lyrics make no sense if you read them on the page, but sung, and accompanied by music, they make all the sense you need. Gorgeous overdub harmonies and jangly folk guitar chords come together in an impressionist portrait of a broken heart. It works merely heard in the background as well as listened to with your eyes closed and the headphones on.
If you haven't picked it up yet, don't wait further. Buy now.
Music Review: A good soundtrack for a long Winter Rating: 5 Stars
I've heard a review say this album is kind of a mix between the vocals of TV on the Radio, with the music of Iron and Wine - I'd say that is a fair assessment. Maybe throw in a little less bleak Nick Drake too. This album was recorded in a cabin in Northern Wisconsin in the Winter and I think the music made shows that. We are in the middle of a long winter right now in Wisconsin and this album is a good soundtrack to play while I walk through the slush and try not to slip on the ice.
Music Review: Tough vocal style for me Rating: 2 Stars
I bought this CD based on "rave reviews". I guess I'm either shallow or something, but I found the vocal style hard to take. I played it for my wife (we rarely agree on what good music is all about) and she found it annoying. For what it's worth she has a music degree. Anyway, I'm going to give it a try again because I really believe there is some good music there, but it may be a while. I'd advise anyone to listen to samples before they buy.
Music Review: BEST ALBUM OF 2008 Rating: 5 Stars
Well, this is something people I know agree. This has become the album of the year for 2008.
Amazing how great an album can be with so many few arrangements.
Intense, thru the music you can feel the loneliness, the sadness, the cold felt during the creation of For Emma, Forever Ago.
If I had to choose an only album from last year, I'm afraid this would be the lucky one to survive the choice.
SUPERB.
Music Review: Unlike anything I have heard before... Rating: 4 Stars
The album "For Emma, Forever Ago" is simply a breath of fresh air. I have never heard anything like it. I read in a magazine article how Bon Iver had been compared to Iron and Wine, and I love I&W, so I decided to check out the album. I was amazed at the pure vulnerability that is heard on this record. Reading the lyrics and listening to the songs are the best way to experience this one of a kind, genuinely original sound.
