Music reviews of A Winter TaleMusic Review: Bobby Long & His Tale of Winter Rating: 4 Stars
I was really excited when I first heard the Bobby was releasing a full studio album (though I have Songs from Across the Pond- which was sold at concerts over the last few years). I have seen him in concert three times in variuos locations and I always like what I heard. There is a raw emotion to his voice that I adore and his sweet, heartbreaking lyrics are amoung the best out there in the arena of folk music.
With that said, there is something too much about this record. Perhaps, I was spoiled with the live shows, but this album (and Bobby, himself) gets lost in the addition of background music. Bobby is very talented, but the 'noise' in the background diminishes his talent. Call me a snob- but when signing with major record lables I have found that it takes a lot of courage to keep your sound a certain way- and here it seems that there was such a push to add more sound that the emotion and rawness of boy meets guitar is lost. This addition from drums, electric guitars, back-up singers cheapens the musical integrity that I first fell in love with; Booby and his magical guitar are overshawdowed by unnecessary noise.
I gave the album 4/5 because Bobby has the uncanny ability to hook you- as long as you are listening for him. I expect great things from Bobby Long and I will not compare him to classic folk singers- (cough Dylan) or contemporary musical twin- (cough Marcus Foster)- he is unique and I appreciate a Brit who can handle a guitar and sing from the heart- hopefully something that will not soon get lost in the transition from folk youngster to folk genius.
Cheers-

Description of A Winter TaleBritish singer-songwriter-guitarist Bobby Long's anticipated debut studio album A Winter Tale, will be released February 1st, 2011 on ATO Records. Currently residing in New York City, the 24-year old Long has been writing finely-crafted songs since taking up the guitar at age 17; from then on he's been creating memorable songs inhabited by hauntingly poetic lyrics. After relocating to London from Wiltshire in the countryside of Southwest England, he became a fixture at London's open-mic nights while attending London Metropolitan University where he studied Music in Film and wrote his thesis on The Social Impact of American Folk Music.
As Long became more entrenched in London's burgeoning open mic circuit, he met actor and fellow musician Robert Pattinson, who would go on to sing "Let Me Sign" (co-written by Long and friend Marcus Foster) over a crucial dramatic scene in the blockbuster film Twilight. The inclusion of the song in the film's soundtrack gave Long a head start on a legion of fans.
A Winter Tale features Nona Hendryx (LaBelle) on backing vocals, B. J. Cole (Elton John, Sting) on pedal steel, and Icelandic singer Lay Low on several tracks.
