Music Review: Bobby Conn Is America's Number One "Christian" Entertainer

...And for good reason. The songs on The Golden Age are reminiscent of several different ages of music, all of them supposedly the smoothest, simplest pop that could exist, somewhat funk, some easy jazz, anything that could fit not so uncomfortably in the concept of "Adult Alternative". It takes a sardonic look at these songs, imbibed with a winking sort of sincerity and a full-hearted tribute to music that the artist loves. If you can deal with some strange Zappa-esque Avant Garde arrangements, such as on "You've Come A Long Way"(which practically make the album for me, personally), or on the opposite side, you can deal with some over-stated pop structures, then you can notice this album for its true self.
The Golden Age is appropriate, because its concept is a Nostalgia that has to be shelved at a young age, of a time that may not have even existed. Let's look at most modern examples of the fifties in television, movies, video games, etc., a time itself considered to be a "Golden Age". Anyone alive then, or of conscious thought towards it can realize that the fifties were nothing as "Leave It To Beaver" conservative idealism dictated it to be, much as liberal post-hippie teen explorers and music fanatics like to label the 1960s as their "Golden Age"(In that that was the point when people decided to Wake Up), and the entire concept of a Party Scene-with drugs, dancing, and music there just to be a backdrop-emphasized in the 1970s, or the first time a "McSong" could be traced into real concrete existence. The Nostalgia present in these ideals are simply faded memories which are faded to the point where you can only remember what you liked about them, and it recurs even sooner with each year, being a child of the 90's, I already feel a sort of this nostalgia with what I remember. This post-modern concept is explored deeply in this album, both on a wide scale, and especially on a personal one. Conn stated that this nostalgia carried with him till his thirties, an infantile treatment of his life still played an important role to him.
The music also has an overall sinister feel, as if there's something he's not quite telling you. That if you idealize with what he says, he both wants to shake your hand and slap you across the face. 'You Fool,' screams The Golden Age, 'How can you be so pathetic and gullible?'
Still though, it would be nice if you picked up this album. He's not well-known, but he makes great music. I have listened to it non-stop for about a month now and with the impressive music(listen more than once before deciding, however)and post-modern concept of the album, it is going to be one of my favorites for years to come.
