Music Review: My dad loved this album and he grew up with Bob and The Playboys

My dad grew up in Tulsa and made many of those noon shows at the Cain's Ballroom in the 30s. So did all of my folks from both sides of the family. Everyone stopped what they were doing to tune into KVOO at lunch time. Bob even played for some of the big ranchers in the area when they got an off night and were on the way to the next gig. Later in his life I bought every Bob Wills CD I could find and made Dad cassette copies so he could listen to Bob in his old pickup. Of all of them Dad said this one reminded him most of what he remembered about The Playboys. That says a lot.
It ain't Bob Wills without Tommy Duncan and Leon McAuliffe. This is the real thing.
Description of Anthology 1935-1973
Building on the sacred tradition of the Texas fiddle band, Wills's Western swing became country music's answer to big-band jazz. Wills gave his Playboys ample room for advanced improvisation, adding instruments (drums, horns, piano, electric guitar) that were not associated with country music. He drew on a variety of styles--not just fiddle tunes and jazz standards, but also polka, blues, mariachi, and Dixieland--punctuating the music with his light-hearted exhortations. This 2 CD compilation provides an overview of his career: from his early Columbia hits with steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe and rhythm guitarist Eldon Shamblin to his final 1973 session, which he conducted from a wheelchair. For those wanting to delve deeper, Columbia's box set and Rhino's nine-volume Tiffany Transcriptions focus more thoroughly on Wills's prime. --Marc GreilsamerGeneral CDs
