Music Review: Absolutely Wonderful and Timeless

Bob Newhart is a classic comic. He is an every man. He does not do profane or lewd material. This might make him seem like an anachronism but it worked for him instead of against him. Most comedians have trouble with their material becoming dated. Newhart does not have this problem. By dealing in the comedy of what the ordinary person can appreciate and experience in today's world, he made himself a comic for the ages. For example, he plays a bus driving training instructor getting the new drivers to be as awful as everyone has ever experienced in riding a bus. This is hilarious because just about everyone has ridden a bus and noticed the bus drivers. Honing the worst of their skills in a school is a hilarious idea which Newhart executes masterfully. Likewise, being Abe Lincoln's agent and advising him about the Gettysburg Address right before he's set to give it is a unique comic take. And who else would advise Lincoln to relax and take in a play with the wife? At the same time I recently listened to this album, I listened to Woody Allen's standup comedy routines from the 1960s. Allen's routines, by contrast to Newhart's, are dated because they are so rooted in a subculture which has all but disappeared in the USA (his Jewish life as lived in the 1960s along with his divorce and his dating life).

Part of what Bob Newhart mastered, earlier on stand-up albums like The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart and The Button-Down Mind Strikes Back! and later on his long-running TV series The Bob Newhart Show and Newhart, was capturing a brand of Everyman neuroses and heightening it, bringing mundane, common scenarios into the realm of the absurd--and the absurdly funny. Newhart also perfected playing a character involved in a conversation with the other party in absentia, as in one of his most famous routines, "King Kong," in which he plays the part of an Empire State Building security guard who calls his boss the night King Kong makes his famous ascent. ("Yes, sir, I looked in the handbook index under 'unauthorized personnel' and 'people without passes' and 'apes,' and 'ape's toes,' but it's not in there....") Something Like This... is a generous sampling of Newhart's best stand-up bits, and while some of his topics--airplanes, hating to fly--have now been so overdone as to be comic faux pas, rather than making his material seem dated they often serve to demonstrate just how rare a talent he is simply because the routines still elicit involuntary snorts of laughter some 30 years later. --Mark Hunstman
